Horn Lowell Varney and Jim Horn, who teamed up over a year ago to form a gospel group which is known as VARNEY and HORN and THE GOSPEL PIONEERS, have released a new album with a new sound. These are the same boys who released "A PLACE CALLED HEAVEN", which is strictly bluegrass. This time the boys used the same instruments, and came up with an unusual folk sound. Lowell and Jim are both song writers, and in this album, you will find some of their songs; as well as arrangements. For instance, Lowell and Jim wrote the song "Mother", which has the unusual sound. They used two guitars, one tuned in minor; later, Lowell, who is one of the finer five- string banjo pickers, tuned his banjo in an unusual key; and as a result, the boys came up with old-time folk sound of gospel music. Jim Horn, who was born in Martin County Kentucky, has been picking and singing gospel music for quite a few years. You'll find in this album that Jim does most of the lead singing, and picks a mighty fine guitar. Jim is an ordained minister, and devotes all his time to the work of God. Jim is married and he, and his wife Bertha, have three fine boys. Lowell Varney, who was born in Crum, West Virginia, and has resided there all his life, picks the five-string banjo on the album. Lowell has been picking the banjo since he was thirteen years old and has developed the three finger style which is similar to Earl Scruggs' style. There is nothing he likes better than to pick and sing old-time gospel music. Lowell is married, and he, and his wife Pat, have a lovely daughter, Lowella, whom they are very proud of. Sherlyn Alley, who sings high tenor on this album, is one of the finest in the business. This is Sherlyn's first record session, and I think you'll agree one of the finest high tenor singers in gospel music. Sherlyn is married, and he, and his wife Mae, have two daughters and one son. Delbert Crum, who sings bass, and a mighty fine bass, has been with this group since they started. Delbert sings in the church choir at his home church. Delbert is married, and he, and his wife Estelle, have three fine boys and one daughter Pat, who Lowell married.
