This second ARKANSAW TRAVELLER Stereo Album includes some of the old "Ballets" and tunes plus a wide variety of Ozark folk instruments. The fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass fiddle, and autoharp may be heard as well as the less common dulcimer, gourd and picking bow. During the last four years, over 40,000 people have seen this group perform, either at the outdoor theatre near Hardy or per- sonal appearances. During the summer, shows are given on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights. Everyone of the performers are natives of North Arkansas. B.F. Anderson has been playing the guitar and singing ballads all his life. Ralph DePriest began fiddling at the age of eight when his father hung his fiddle on the kitchen waii and told him not to be playing it. Bruce Fernimen and Jim Buchanan are outstanding banjo players. Terry Richardson and Debbie Sanders are very popular performers. Nancy Rainey's dulcimer always attracts lots of attantion. Neal Crow is actually the star of the Traveller Show in his "Squatter" role. "Old Blue", his dog, has missed only one show in four years. Olaf and Orilla Pinkston deserve most of the credit for the quality of music, having served as musical, directors for the group since the theatre was begun. Perhaps two unusual "sounds" on the album deserve special explanation. Benson Fox of Leslie, Arkansas, the "musical groud" master, shared his technique of rubbing a stick on a notched gourd for a rhythm effect. Last winter, Bruce Fernimen discovered he could make it sound like a train and the travellers version of the "Orange Blossom Special" was created A sweet gum stick was cut from Wayne Raney's yard during the recording session to use on the gourd. The other is the picking bow, perhaps the oldest folk instrument known. Years ago, Charlie Evendge of Stone County was the last known player of the bow. Jimmy Driftwood of Timbo, Arkansas saved it from extinction and today it has become pop- ular again.
