This listing is for a 1980 Jamaican pressing of “Scientist V Prince Jammy Big Showdown” from the Jah Guidance label.


I love this record.


It is important to note that this pressing is unique in that it is a completely different LP with completely different music than the Greensleeves pressings (the one that starts with an announcer saying “Introducing to the world, the big showdown…”). Instead, this record is actually what was re-released in 2005 as “Barrington Levy in Dub” through Auralux Recordings. You can listen to these differences on YouTube.


This note from Discogs explains it well:


“The Big Showdown, the first dub album to surface from the Barrington Levy sessions at Channel One, released in 1980 by Greensleeves in the UK. What few realize is that Junjo issued a totally different companion album in Jamaica on Jah Guidance using the same sleeve and track listing as the Greensleeves disc but featuring ten totally different Barrington Levy dubs, again mixed at King Tubby's studio. Although both discs [Greensleeves and Jah Guidance] featured dubs of the tracks "Reggae Music", "Looking My Love", and "Black Heart Man" the other seven dubs were never issued on an album and each mix on the Jah Guidance release is distinctly different from that of any other release ever issued in any format; the mixes there are much sparser and rawer, aimed as they were at the Jamaican market of the time.” - David Katz

Media condition: Very Good VG


Most tracks play VG with light pops, some tracks lean VG+. A1 and B5 have a couple of more pronounced pops but they don’t distract from the music. The B side center label has some scuff marks and small tear. See pictures. Personal note: The record sounds great to me. Pops and hiss were never distracting while listening through on loud speakers, but are more audible when it’s only the bass playing.


Sleeve condition: Very Good VG


Sleeve has some light writing on the front and also near the track names on the back. Edges show some wear but no tears are visible. Light discoloration on back of sleeve. See pictures. Personal note: The sleeve looks fantastic for its age. The back has more wear than the front.


I am hoping this classic record can go to someone who will enjoy it. The only reason I am selling it is because I bought this copy on accident because I already have one. The record ships from Oklahoma in the US.
