4 x hard-to-find vintage UK folk LPs 1968 - 1977
There are four really quite scarce folk albums in this group. Because there are four, I don’t really have the space to describe them in detail but I provide below a brief summary of each. If you would like to know more about any of the albums, please do message me. I have provided an image of the track listing of each album above:
Michael Hunt with the Dombie Brothers: Blaydon Races; Decca Eclipse ECS.2037, 1970.
I believe the Dombie Brothers were a gigging folk band from the North East. Michael Hunt, their regular vocalist is given top-billing on this LP for some reason. Released on Eclipse, one of Decca’s subsidiary budget labels, this album features only music from the North East, including such Geordie classics as The Blaydon Races, Cushie Butterfield and Keep Your Feet Still Geordie Hinny. The sleeve is slightly grubby to the back but otherwise fine. The record itself is in excellent condition and plays perfectly.
Orange and Blue: The English Dancing Master; EFDSS PLA 2, 1977
The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) issued numerous albums and EPs in the 1960s and 70s intended to help keep the folk tradition alive. This album features fourteen English country dance tunes first published by John Playford in the middle of the 17th century. The tunes are performed by a band called “Orange and Blue” which I think was made up of musicians regularly used as session players by the EFDSS (see image above). The sleeve and labels are in excellent condition. The record has some faint surface marks here and there but plays extremely well for the most part although there is a little crackling in places and a few clicks.
Various Artists: Songs of Seduction; Topic 12T158, 1968
One of two records here originally issued on Topic, another label of the 60s and 70s completely dedicated to keeping traditional folk music alive. This album is the second in Topic’s Folk Songs of Britain series. All the tacks here were “collected” by legendary folk archivists Alan Lomax and Peter Kennedy who made these live recordings in country pubs around the UK in the 1950s. All the songs are performed by long-standing local singers, not folk revivalists. The album title is “Songs of Seduction” but actually it would be better called “Songs of Lust” – for the most part the songs are in the tradition of bawdiness and celebration. Sleeve, labels and record are all in excellent condition. There is an information booklet included with this album, which includes the lyrics of all the songs (see final image above)
The Broken Consort and The Singing Tradition: The Painful Plough; Impact IMP-A103, 1972
Impact was a subsidiary label of Topic Records (see above). This album was released in 1972 to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the National Union of Agricultural Labourers by Joseph Arch (1826 – 1919). The traditional songs reflect the experience of agricultural labourers. As you can see from the image above, the sleeve seems to have had a couple of bites taken out of it by someone’s dog! The record itself is still in first class condition though. There is an information booklet included with this album, which includes the lyrics of all the songs (see final image above).
