The Hesitations were formed in 1966, taking their members from a number of earlier vocal groups based in and around Cleveland, Ohio. They were fronted by George "King" Scott, who possessed one of the most recognisable leads that have ever graced a turntable. The remaining Hesitations were Phillip Dorroh, Robert Sheppard, Arthur Blakely, Fred Deal, and Leonard Veal, Jr. The legendary status held by the group today is almost entirely concentrated on their first four singles, plus the "Soul Superman" album on which they were collected. The reason is simple: the group travelled to Detroit to record them, trusting the Pied Piper/GWP team and the Terra Shirma Studios to come up with their usual high standard. Pied Piper Productions was essentially Joe Hunter, Mike Terry, Jack Ashford, and Lorraine Chandler (or 'E. Lewis', as she was often credited).

Today I'm listing all four of the above-mentioned singles, with the remaining three all being original styrene issues. While "You'll Never Know" is another fine Ashord-Chandler composition, it's the flip that's better known. It's another of their instantly recognisable tunes, because it utilises the same backing track as the Willie Kendrick version - indeed, he was one of the song's authors. It was the group's last 45 to flop before "Born Free" briefly propelled them into the big time - peaking at #4 on the Billboard R&B chart, very early in 1968. Tragically, lead singer George Scott was killed in February of that year, accidentally shot by a gun owned by Fred Deal, the group's tenor.

A. Less immediate than most of their early Kapp sides, but actually a superb mid-tempo finger-clicker; solid rhythm, and the usual high standard of lead and backing vocals.

B. Amazing vibe-led remake of the Willie Kendrick goodie; listen in full via the above youtube posting (not taken from the copy for sale).

The styrene grades at just below excellent, by virtue of some lightish scuffs/"spiders webs" (visual grading). This doesn't affect the sound quality at all, and both sides play almost like new (sound grading).

Both labels have the spots of whitening, mostly around the edges.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.
