Up for auction is a 1940s? big band swing / classical 78 rpm 2 record set recorded by The Hour Of Charm All Girl Orchestra Under The Direction Of Phil Spitalny on Vogue (Picture Discs).

The sides are: Rhapsody In Blue (Pts. 1 & 2) / Alice Blue Gown / Blue Skies.

Phil Spitalny (November 7, 1890, Tetiev, Ukraine (territory of Russian Empire) – October 11, 1970, Miami Beach, Florida) was a musician, music critic, composer and bandleader heard often on radio during the 1930s and 1940s. He rose to fame after he brought together an orchestra with only female musicians, a novelty at the time.

On radio, Spitalny was introduced as Phil Spitalny and His All-Girl Orchestra featuring Evelyn and her Magic Violin. The magic violinist was Evelyn Kaye Klein, who used the professional name, Evelyn Silverstone. She helped Spitalny find the women he needed to assemble his all-female orchestra. Together, they auditioned more than 1000 musicians in New York, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Pittsburgh.

Spitalny's 22-piece band was known as the Hour of Charm Orchestra during the time it appeared on the radio program, The Hour of Charm, hosted by Arlene Francis. The program aired in various timeslots on CBS and NBC from 1934 to 1948.

Evelyn Kaye Klein and Spitalny married in June 1946.

Grading System:

• NM = near new condition
• E = barely played, extremely close to near new condition
• VG = played, but not abused condition, should play very well, may have light scratches, scuffs
• G = well played, but should play pretty well, will have deeper scratches, scuff; may have some background noise, scratches, scuffs, wear
• P = well used, pretty bad condition, lots of background noise

Records grades VG/VG+ with good shine. Have very few light marks and scratches. There is a very slight/shallow storage warp that does not affect playability one bit nor does it require excessive pressure to track (I used 2.5 grams in the sound files above). (I would have tried to flatten in the sun for a few minutes but it played flawlessly as is.) Graphics are vibrant. The album is still functional but is in poor condition. Tape is shoring up seam splits and the spine is a bit frayed and tattered. It did its job over the decades though protecting both discs. (Please use the Full Screen & Zoom features on the pictures to get a more accurate depiction of the playing surfaces). Photos have not been photoshopped (contrasted or enhanced).

These records will be very securely packaged for shipment. The discs will be packed securely in a 78 mailer alone and will then be placed in a larger box that will contain the album. Please let me know if you would like your records insured.
