Description
Up for sale is a very rare and desirable mono LP that was lavishly produced by a very expensive record label. The Masterseal label was launched by promoter Don Gabor and featured productions by Marcel Prawy. It existed for only a few years before being abandoned, probably because of the threat of a lawsuit from the similarly named Columbia "Masterworks" label.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897 - 1957) was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (a city currently located in the Czech Republic) into a musically talented Jewish family. He was a child prodigy who was composing music from age 7. At age 10, he played his own music for Gustav Mahler, who proclaimed him a "musical genius". At age 13, he played a command performance for Emperor Franz Joseph. Korngold was widely acclaimed for his ballet and operatic compositions, as well as for various orchestral works. In 1935, he was invited to Hollywood to adapt Felix Mendelssohn's score for a planned film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Subsequently, he became the first internationally respected composer to contract with a movie studio (Warner Brothers, for 1935's Captain Blood). He had a tremendous career in Hollywood, winning two Academy Awards (for 1936's Anthony Adverse and for 1938's The Adventures of Robin Hood). Korngold retired from Hollywood in 1947 devoting himself again to serious orchestral work. At the time of his death, he was something of a forgotten figure. But there has been a posthumous renewal of interest in this brilliant and creative composer.
