Akai 4000DS - Mk2 Reel To Reel Tape Recorder

For auction is this nicely cared for Akai 4000DS Mk2 Stereo tape recorder that has just been serviced.
This model is the later version with the sprung spool retainers and detachable head cover.
These machines when new gave the opportunity to copy music with virtually no loss of sound quality hence their huge popularity in the 70’s.
This lovely machine is supplied with 2 x BASF 7” spools, 1 full and 1 empty. Also included is a set of Phono and 5 - pin Din interconnecting leads and a copy of the original manufacturers instruction book.
This tape deck is in very good condition cosmetically – just a few slight marks but hardly noticeable.
I have checked all the functions and they operate as they should including spooling, recording and playing back – sounds stunning on 7.5 ips speed!
The mechanical condition of this machine is excellent as can be seen in the photos.
The VU meter illumination lights up too.
The machine has 2 speeds: 3.3/4 & 7.1/2 ips.
3 x heads - suitable for 'off tape' monitoring.
4 x track stereo 'sound-on-sound' recording facility
Stereo headphone output socket on a quarter inch jack & left and right microphone inputs.
This recorder can also be used as a 4 – track mono machine.

On the 3.3/4 speed with a 3600ft’ tape, the machine will record or play over 3hrs of music without having to be touched. By turning over the tape will give an additional 3hrs of time over 6 hrs in total.

Akai 4000DS Mk2 machines where manufactured circa 1976-1978 and they recorded and played back giving excellent results (due to the 1 micron gap heads).
These particular models were the successor to the 4000DS (circa 1972-1976) which in its turn was a successor to the famous 4000D (circa 1970-1972) with several improvements. These machines proved to be reliable workhorses like their forebearers, this was due to the simple but rugged construction which gave a build quality beyond its competitors in the same price range.
The last "4000" model produced by Akai was the GX - 4000D. This machine incorporated glass/crystal ferrite recording heads that resulted in a better frequency response and boasted a lifetime guarantee!
Indeed, these machines from Akai are still noted for their reliability and endurance which has made them something of a legend, they are still going strong after 30 years plus.....how many modern machines will be able to boast that?
So if you want a reliable machine that delivers the performance and includes that lovely rich warm sound, pick one up now whilst you still can and keep analogue alive!
