Al Casey has had a long and productive career as a multi instumentalist, contributing much spark and fire to notable Duane Eddy sessions in particular. His one lone moment in the national chart spotlight came when Duane's producer Lee Hazlewood had a falling out and Casey inherited "Surfin' Hootenanny," what would have been the Twang Man's next single. With Darlene Love and the Blossoms doing honors as the 'K.C.-ettes' and Al turning spot on the money sound bite impressions of Dick Dale, the Ventures, and old Duane himself, the combination was cool enough to get the 45 up to mid chart status in 1963. Certainly enough red vinyl biscuits went out the door for an album to be forthcoming, loaded with surf music classics. Hard to believe then that one of the world's greatest surf albums was only cut in just under six hours, but when Al Casey and producer Lee Hazlewood got together to assemble tracks for this, that's exactly how the scenario worked out. With Leon Russell on organ and Hal Blaine on drums, they blasted out a take of each tune (three of them presented here as alternate take bonus CD cuts), then pressed on. As a matter of fact, Casey had a gig booked that day as a member of the folk group the Raintree County Singers. Told by Hazlewood that they still needed a couple of tracks to fill the album. Casey kept the taxi meter running, came back inside the studio and blasted out a couple of takes of "Surfin' Blues," presented here as a 'two parter.' One of the great early surf albums, presented here in sparkling stereo off the master tapes, this is one of those collectors' items that truly deserves it rep.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER:
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some writing on its front side (name of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about ½ x 2 inches in size) (BARELY VISIBLE, integrated into cover's color scheme)
- Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
- Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the top seam (nothing significant)
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
