(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT MINUS. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

Amoebas in Chaos, like most of Bloomington’s more left-field punk/new wave bands from the early 80s, are best known for their contribution to Gulcher Records’ RED SNERTS COMPILATION. Like the other bands on Red Snerts, Amoebas in Chaos inhabited a hazy and mysterious no-man’s-land of the punk scene at the time. Geographically too far from New York or London to be part of any various factions of the “real” punk scene, several of Bloomington’s best 80s bands chose not to worry much about mainstream success, instead creating a homegrown scene in their own little college town, which has since achieved legendary status for all those who care enough to notice. And not only was the resulting music (art rock, new wave, punk rock) up to par in its time, it also possesses several unique quirks that make it important today: a willingness to experiment with sounds that more-mainstream acts might shy away from, a playfulness that seems to result from the knowledge that these bands would probably never “make it” on a larger scale, and a sincere desire to create something one-of-a-kind during an important period of musical innovation. In many ways, the influence of Red Snerts and all of its bands, including Amoebas in Chaos, can still be felt today in the Bloomington scene (and elsewhere).
In fact, Amoebas in Chaos’s contribution, “Designer Genes”, is the first song on the comp, and it was probably the perfect choice for how to introduce some of the midwest’s weirdest bands to the rest of the world. “Designer Genes” blends Lynn Shipley’s strong, confident voice with a simple beat and catchy bass line. It sounds like overly hyper white kids attempting to combine punk rock and dub reggae with no guitars and minimal studio effects. Little wooden-sounding pings (I’m guessing it’s a synthesizer) click along to the beat, and the lyrics sound like biting commentary on society's materialistic obsession with fashion and style: “Try to be real saucy / But you just look cheap instead.” Shipley’s vocals and the melodic bass line make it easy to compare “Designer Genes” to THE SLITS, but Amoebas in Chaos possessed an authenticity and rawness that went beyond that of the punk scene's more well-known bands. In addition, none of their other songs really sound like “Designer Genes,” thus making the band worthy of exposition beyond their best-known song.
Amoebas in Chaos formed in 1981 as a new project for members of two recently broken-up Bloomington bands: Blind Date and The Premature Babies. Their unpolished sound, jerky energy, synth explorations, and avant garde artistic leanings quickly aligned them with other underground Indiana bands like their friends THE DANCING CIGARETTES (Bloomington) and DOW JONES & THE INDUSTRIALS (Lafayette). In 1982, Amoebas In Chaos recorded their sole LP, On to Mayday, at Zounds Studio in West Lafayette with Dow Jones keyboardist, Brad “Mr. Science” Garton. The album was released on Hardly Music, a joint-effort DIY label that involved members of Amoebas in Chaos, THE LAST FOUR DIGITS, and Dow Jones and the Industrials.
On to Mayday begins with the fittingly spastic “Incognito”, which features spiky guitar sounds, an energetic punk beat, ghostly synth gurgles, and interesting sonic effects flowing in and out of the mix. Rick Wilkerson hollers and convulses through his almost tuneless vocals, easily matching Pere Ubu and early Talking Heads in terms of anxious inflection and insanity. “Tidal Waves” is another standout track from On to Mayday with more weird synth sounds, free-floating textures, and a creepy, claustrophobic vibe. “Computer Card Violence” brings back the fast beat and skewed-pop tendencies with more great vocals by Wilkerson and Shipley, who sometimes end up sounding like a less kitsch B-52’s, albeit with added outer-space synths, angular guitar lines, and well-placed splashes of echo (think of the more jarring techniques used in dub music). Another song recorded at the band’s sessions for Red Snerts, “Have You Slugged Your Kid Today?”, was omitted from the full length but is definitely a must-hear Amoebas in Chaos song. It is rife with nasty guitars, rapid punk shouting courtesy of Shipley, and some perplexingly satirical social commentary in the lyrics: “Beat your kids / Beat your wife / Beat ‘em til they beg for life / Beat the dog / Beat the cat / Beat ‘em ‘til they don’t come back.”These sentiments alone should have made this a punk classic, but Amoebas in Chaos were obviously just too weird (or too far ahead of their peers) to fit comfortably in any scene.
Around the time the LP was released, Amoebas in Chaos attempted to relocate to Boston, replacing drummer Bruce Demaree with Kevin Cameron. The band stayed together for a couple years, but Shipley developed tendonitis and was unable to continue playing bass. After trying to find more replacement members in Boston, Amoebas in Chaos called it quits in 1983. On To Mayday was the last release on Hardly Music, which also released several important 45s, and Rick Wilkerson eventually returned to Indianapolis to run Missing Link Records in Broad Ripple. The band has recently gained some momentum due to a renewed interest in Bloomington’s 80’s punk scene, and they occasionally update THEIR FB PAGE with photos and recordings as well as news about members’ recent projects. As for any type of reunion or reissue of the band’s LP, I suppose only time will tell (although I have heard that if you can track down Rick Wilkerson, he may be able to find you an original copy).
