Stunning ORIGINAL United Artists Records 1st PRESSING LP Housed in Fabulous Laminated Gatefold Sleeve!

Highly collectable original 1972 UK 1st pressing LP from this legendary late 60s early 70s German krautrock psych / prog pioneers.

Carnival In Babylon was the band’s fourth album, following three other superb titles after breaking away from the original Amon Duul band due to musical differences and direction. Carnival In Babylon is one of the more overlooked Amon Duul albums by it's startling appearance in the Amon Duul II timeline and transitional nature, but it is weird and wonderful and definitely one of the more interesting jewels in the Amon Duul II catologue. For everyone who missed the sixties who still want to grow up to be a hippie, Amon Duul II's Carnival In Babylon in all it's psychedelic surreal exaltations, was Amon Duul II's last true dose of tripping hippie vibes. A faction of a Munich hippie commune that originated in the late 60s, this offshoot was the one who were more musically inclined, and although these tendancies shined through occasionally on previous albums, Carnival In Babylon is where they were really able to consolidate their free-forming attitudes with some semblance of coherence, but not to worry no top 40 station still would touch them with a ten foot pole in their worst nightmares and soundest minds.

Often compared to England’s Hawkwind, Amon Duul II made some of the most stunning progressive rock sounds from the early 70s. More intricate songs and less ‘basic’ than the early raw sound of Hawkwind, and generally less spacy sounding, Amon Duul II even had a female vocalist (Renate Knaup-Krotenschwanz). Personally I love all their early works and this is yet another great and ultimate classic krautrock psychedelic album. The importance of Amon Duul II within the ‘Krautrock’ genre is so often understated when compared to other classic bands like Can, Faust, Neu and Kraftwerk – its long time that record was put right. A magnificent fully laminated gatefold sleeve that will be near impossible to ever find better. The record looks and plays fantastic and I doubt if it’s been on a deck more than a handful of times.

This album is the apex of Amon Duul's musical achievements. The sheer wealth of imagination is breathtaking, as they mix some truly diverse elements into a unique and instantly recognisable style.

The textures and soundscapes maintain interest over the whole album, as songs change gears effortlessly. The band had a wonderful fusion of influences at this stage of their career, touching upon psychedelia, folk, rock and progressive inclinations, with lyrics shrouded in obscure mysticism. Listening to "CARNIVAL IN BABYLON" is a sublime experience, a spellbinding album which fuses psychedelia, krautrock and progressive acid/folk-rock in a way no one else could. Without a question Renate Knaup’s vocals do take some slight adjustment to get into but for this music lover it fits perfectly. This is a mindblowing and wonderous album to listen to and I love their use of distorted acid guitar and phasing effects and of course vintage keyboards. The songs are probably the strongest the band ever went in a studio with and the playing is awesome!!

This is a truly magical album that deserves to be in any serious 70's krautrock / prog / psych rock collection.

Stunning original UK 1st PRESS...Beautiful gleaming vinyl surfaces with deep shine, only played a handful of times from new!

(A superb visual and aural copy. Super clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed. Just ultra faint, fine and few surface traces can be seen under angled light, merely removal types that few, if any record this age will not have. Totally superficial of course and hardly even showing. I have seen brand new records with more marks than this! A copy hardly even played which is unusual – for those who bought these German prog albums, most played them heavily – for fans of this genre, these were immensely popular. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors. This super record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very powerful sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted, and few copies will play better than this. The record delivers fantastic audio throughout with great powerful sound clarity. A fabulous original UK 1st pressing of this classic krautrock / psych LP. I very much doubt if you can find a significantly better copy!!)

Labels: EX (+)

(Very clean and highly attractive Cream and Brown labels with only one small circular stamp on the B-side label (see pics), a couple of light abrasions with some faint spindle traces on side two. Clearly a record little handled or likely played and finding this title better will prove immensely difficult if not near impossible)

Gatefold Sleeve: EX+ near MINT

(Immaculate with very little to fault at all. There are just a few very small light wrinkle creases close to the spine and edges along with a minute tiny scuff near the bottom of the open out edge. This stunning fully laminated gatefold sleeve has barely a noteworthy rub or friction blemish at all apart from a tiny trace of shelfwear rubbing on the bottom edge of the front gatefold. The spine is solid, thick, straight and square, all the text is near perfect and unworn. The centrefold of the gatefold sleeve is near perfect, ultra clean, fresh and unmarked. This beautiful fully laminated gatefold sleeve, 'Printed and made by Garrod and Lofthouse Ltd.',  is a real beauty and will prove close to impossible to find significantly better!)

Magnificent top near MINT condition 1972 UK original 1st PRESS issue of extremely hard to find album by legendary GERMAN KRAUTROCK PIONEERS

On offer here, from my own collection, is a SUPERB and virtually MINT condition original UK 1st PRESS of the classic AMON DUUL 1972 album 'CARNIVAL IN BABYLON', issued on the UK 1st press United Artists Records label. The LP comes housed in its beautiful original 1st press fully laminated gatefold sleeve.

In the early 70s, this version of Amon Düül II was churning out classic albums for fun! Carnival In Babylon was the fourth album in this spectacular run of records that included Phallus Dei, Yeti, Tanz Der Lemminge and Wolf City (please see my other listings for original 1st PRESS copies of several of these incredible albums). Carnival In Babylon is the perfect introduction to the weird and wonderful world of Germany's greatest progressive rock band.

"CARNIVAL IN BABYLON" is one of the best, maybe EVEN THE BEST, albums by the legendary German krautrock / prog rock group AMON DUUL II. This fantastic album has everything the band had been up to that point distilled in a single magnificent album, that's CARNIVAL IN BABYLON. Here is a musical journey worth experiencing, Carnival In Babylon does not disappoint, the whole album is exquisite, majestic and timeless!!

A PSYCHEDELIC KRAUTROCK PROG CLASSIC OF THE HIGHEST ORDER!

There is something truly memorizing in the earlier works of AMON DUUL II who managed to release some fantastic early 70's albums. Literally wedged somewhere between the darker psychedelic 60's and the progressive underground German 70's AMON DUUL II emerged as the genre pioneers. "Carnival In Babylon" is a very trippy and evocative album full of allusions to PINK FLOYD and HAWKWIND and a ton of originality. I personally feel this album is interchangeable with "Wolf City" and find this to be the musical companion. As you would expect this album is full of creativity and progressive originality and if you listen real carefully you will hear things you have not ever before. This album smells flowers, peace and drugs influences. The folk side of the band is very evident in these stoned epic / short rock suites. The long improvised, psychedelic instrumentals are properly neglected in favour of rather peaceful ballads sung by the lovely lady vocalist Renate Knaupp.

It's hard for someone who wasn't there in the autumn of 1971 to imagine why Carnival In Babylon was met with so much chagrin by hard core fans because in retrospect it was such a pivotal album for Amon Duul and it was more for those who wanted to trip out to directionless jams high on illicit drugs that it was the beginning of the end. In fact, more meaningful experimenting was taking place here than during the feakout days of Phallus Dei, Tanz Der Lemminge and Yeti as and it was obvious that this was a thing of the past with the record companies, if not in the creative energies that rested within the Amon Duul II communal as the drugs wore off. It's not as if there were any real radical changes occurring here, the band's creative faculties were as fertile as ever, but there were many refinements which allowed many of these qualities that were betwixed amid the narcotic blurrs of the band's formative stage to ascend. By no means approaching musical virtuosic proportions, more thought was given to arrangement and composition here with distinct qualities showing through such as the contrast and counterpoint demonstrated by the diametrically opposed guitar players Chris Karrer and John Weinzierl who can be distinquished by their respective technical and more artsy approaches to their individual playing. Although the extended psyched out pieces Shimmering Sands, Hawknose Harlequin and Kronwinkel 12 ( which was the commune's Munich address ) still nod back to the previous freeform musical convictions they are more rounded with more pronounced ethno- atmospheric undertones most notably East-Indian sensitvities that make them sound more like bona-fide musical compositions.

Still avoiding commercialism, there were nonetheless still enough spacey trippy aspects to the music created by Karl-Heinz Hausmann's glittering electronic colouring and Farfisa organ to satisfy spaced out audiences. The murky lyrics still needed decoding here and were as dark and gothic as ever but with the streamlining in the music we get more of Renate's graphic witchy vocals playing off the more organic male counterparts which adds to the overall minor-keyed strangeness of the music which is belied by the mirthful album title. Tables Are Turned and All the Years Round, complex rock songs if anything, are the two tracks on the record that still capture the aura and spirit of the hippie culture as they groove and flow with more East Indian nuances with Renate's warped vocals conjuing up mezmerizing images as if to say we're still hippies!

Dominated by delicious musical parts of the two guitarists and gentle vocal melodies, this album is absolutely a high water mark in Amon Duul II's career, showing another side of their music, less experimental and complex but a beautiful deeply psychedelic / adid-folk-rock music. I always said that AMON DUUL II is a band you have to acquire a taste for. I guess I have.... A FANTASTIC ALBUM!

"Carnival In Babylon" is a truly brilliant amalgam of blazing heavy acid rock, authentic eastern influences, lush gothic menace, psych-acid-folk and straight ahead midblowing prog rock!! Simultaneously harrowing and lighthearted, each song is a wild ride; various trippy and evocative passages come together to create an album that both defines, and strays from, the Krautrock ideal.

AMON DUUL II has had quite an output over the years and the magnificent CARNIVAL IN BABYLON is certainly amongst their VERY BEST albums. CARNIVAL IN BABYLON is truly a JEWEL from the early 70s and is absolutely essential for fans of the bands early freakout period. Krautrock never sounded any better than this!

This brilliant album is a 'MUST HAVE' for 70s KRAUTROCK afficionados, seldom comes up for sale and even less so in such superb condition.
