Label/Format: Liberty – Original Black format, to be best of my knowledge, this album was not issued on the blue Liberty format (please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: All four nigh-on immaculate: ultra clean and attractive with barely a spindle trace to be seen, they average one faint one apiece, side four has a couple of ultra faint surface rubs (this being critical under light). Rarely ever see these Krautrock classics looking like this. For the few who shelled out and bought these originally, most were well played and enjoyed but this pair look barely even handled or played, reitterated by perfect clean sound for their entire duration. These matt black labels are highly revealing of any blemishes but looking quite magnificent with minimal traces of handling.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 143 / 138 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: very difficult to find early Krautrock albums this lightly played and clean. Bought by the few and curious and rarely hi-fi buffs, most found are well played and in poor condition. This pair of records will prove near impossible to find better – both immaculate visually and play the same. What is equally significant for the discerning collector is the cover: one of my personal favourite ‘rock’ covers ever and rarely found even a decent Very Good. Most seen very tired and shabby looking usually with deep penetrating ringwear to the very soft textured, thin card. These two very solid Liberty records, over time, grind their way into the surfaces leaving heavy white rings around the record’s shape. Often deep enough to go full circle and ruin this classic and richly coloured artwork. Finding an example with barely any rim rubs is almost, but not quite impossible, but take a look at this one. Okay, a very fine ring arc near the top edge on the front, but that’s about it. Few will get near it, and the lack of creasing, fading and tears is rare, make no mistake. All this too on a very early pressed copy with very early original mothers and early stampers. This classic Krautrock album will prove hard to find like this again soon and truly such copies are rare.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 1960s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument at all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound (Faust). A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond any dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered, especially in high grading conditions.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Yeti was the band’s second album, following the remarkable Phallus Dei after breaking away from the original Amon Duul band due to musical differences and direction. Often compared to England’s Hawkwind but on this one, High Tide should be mentioned also, Amon Duul II made some of the most stunning progressive rock sounds from the early 70s. More intricate songs and less ‘basic’ than the early raw sound of early acid-phase Hawkwind, and less spacy sounding, Amon Duul II even had a female vocalist (Renate Knaup-Krotenschwanz) who often sang deliberately off-key to enhance the mayhem. Crazed acid-soaked violin and guitar go head-to-head with long improvisations and the results are astonishing. Personally I love all their early works but Yeti for me is their most outstanding work. The importance of their music within the ‘Krautrock’ genre is so often understated when compared to other classic bands like Can, Faust, Neu, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk – its long time that record was put right. This album is heavy and I mean HEAVY and includes some of the most awesome power-riffs ever put to vinyl, play this album loud (and you can really let this copy go with 100 per cent confidence) and it could rip the cloth of your speakers. The sheer gut-wrenching power embedded in these very clean, wear-free grooves cannot fail to impress and even audiophile connoisseurs will be left aghast hearing this on a high quality hi-fi system (this copy is well worthy). Featuring too the classic ‘Reaper’ cover, and rarely will it ever be seen better. A cover that simply NEVER gets found without wear because of the lack of laminate protection and including very fine texturing with bright, vivid artwork, printed on thin softish card. With two heavy pressed records inside, this always gets ringwear almost without exception and edgewear is almost obligatory. Most are seen rubbed to whiteness with edges even fraying, sometimes even worn right through. The front and backs often resemble dartboards with full circles of deep, penetrating, ugly ringwear. Well this one has a faint arc near the top front edge and this is eye candy to the cover connoissuer. This is gorgeous, even with some bottom edge rubs, but who wants to look at the edges, the really important one, the spine, is almost perfect as my picture and close-up shows. If loud, raw, full throttle power prog-rock is your thing, Yeti is up there with the very best ever. Warm up that amp, blow your mind and let the full intensity of Yeti take control.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ and well worthy of this daring grade on one of rock’s most uncompromising covers, it’s arguably even better. It’s an unlaminated gatefold with fine texturing on the front and back – the inner is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Certainly up there with the most delicate and wear-prone covers made from this era and even though this does have some rubbing on the bottom edges and minor wear, it’s miles above average and importantly, looks fantastic.

Cover Front: Brilliant sleeve, one of my real favourites, this has haunting menace and I cannot reitterate enough how hard this is to find like this. Retaining stunning good looks with rich unfaded colour with no grubbiness and only minimal rubbing with a very fine rim arc near the top edge. About the only way this could be avoided was for the owner to have stored the records outside the cover for 40 years – real likely isn’t it? The man wielding the scythe was Wolfgang Kriske, a non-band member who stayed with the group, the famous picture was shot by Falk Rogner’s, it was used to depict ‘Der Schnitter’ (The Harvester), who cuts down people’s lives’ said Rogner, ‘a very strong figure in German mythology’. It has become one of underground rock’s most famous iconic covers ever, so I feel to offer one still in superb visual condition is significant. This has barely any creases and few marks, the lack of speckle to raised fine texturing is also unusual. Very faint and light edge rubs just about (reitterate ‘just’) encroach into view but if anyone has a much better example of this classic cover, well they are indeed very lucky.

Cover Back: The back is in superb condition with barely any rubbing at all and also devoid of any noteworthy creasing. One ultra faint ring arc near the top edge again is even lighter than the front and any marks are tiny anf faint. The original EJ Day imprint text is pristine. All very similar or better than the front.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The eerie, equally classic ‘sea horse’ artwork is immaculate and unworn.

Top Edges: Light patchy rubbing, far less than most seen.

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing on these resting edges, few, if any avoid it.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, and unusuall sharp with barely any wear and no feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on these vulnerable right outside edges.

Spine and Text: An exceptional spine also which has barely any wear at all. Solid, clean with no compression and folded squarely with both right edges meeting up perfectly together and parallel. All text present and totally unworn as my close-up will confirm.

Corners: All corners show rubbing as you will almost expect on this one. In in context of their respective edge. The spine remains very neat and being white itself, shows little wear on the sides. Fine shape is generally retained.

Cover Summary: An immensely difficult sleeve but remaining very pleasing to the eye. Believe me, I have seen examples of this one in tatters, literally falling apart with more white rubbing that ink left intact. On that basis, I consider this one quite exceptional and it will please many, if not most collectors. Realistically, even the more discerning collector can consider this one too.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) A superb visual set that are super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on top quality vinyl. Just a mere few ultra fine surface traces with close scrutiny under light, these will prove incredibly difficult to find better and visually near top-drawer. Both look hardly even played and should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed, heavy sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds (but who would notice anyway)?, and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. If heavy guitar-rock with thunderous power riffs is your thing, few did it better than these German pioneers. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel certain. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these brilliant records – a title I look forward to hearing again on vinyl. The analogue format is perfect for this powerful, heavy rock music. This set will prove immensely difficult to find better and are unreservedly recommended. Certainly a contender for Krautrock’s greatest ever.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
