Label/Format: Polydor – original matt finished with the text actually engraved into the labels. Being black only, this is only really readable with angled viewing, I hope my picture can be seen clearly? The same format was used on their debut album too, which was silver. (Please see my label picture).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive. Spindle marks are around moderate but very fine, hence they show little unless scrutinised more close under angled light. The sound quality on this record is fantastic and plays with barely anything unwanted at all.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 60s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument as all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound. A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Faust’s second and last album for Polydor before signing to Virgin. Whereas their first album was issued with everything clear – this time, everthing is black – including the labels. So Far is classic experimental Krautrock from these German pioneers of the genre. Very experimental and uncompromising at times but very slightly less challenging than their debut. Along with Can, Faust made great music, and unlike most of the band’s who loved to experiment with sound, Faust never sold out to commercialism - they remained cutting edge, even slightly weird - far too strange and dense for many listeners who refused to even try. Like all fine music of this type it takes time and perseverance, when their music really clicks in, its truly wonderful. Incredible rock music with use of electronics and at times sounding like the other great sound pioneer Frank Zappa. So Far was recorded at Wümme in March 1972 and was produced by Uwe Nettelbeck. This copy on offer includes the nine full sized cards (one for each song) and the lyric sheet making 10 altogether. The black wallet sleeve is also here in which they are kept. Each of the other cards is named after the tracks included on the album. The record comes in it’s black polylined inner and that very delicate soft card black unlaminated matt cover. The whole package is in very fine condition with a record that plays superbly. Clearly the black pictures are prone to handling marks and these show some, more seen under light. A couple of the seams on the inners were unstuck and one neat split – all have been very neatly fixed and repaired and you would even know now. Complete originals of this album are scarce – it has been reissued at least a couple of times – but nothing beats owning the real thing, the one issued back in 1972 when this pioneering band were at their peak. For those unfamiliar with Faust, this is a great place to start – few prog-rock fans will be disappointed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being very critical on a very wear-prone cover. A single matt finished format made with soft thin card, the type that can go wooly and easily splits and tears. Printed and made in England, marketed by Polydor. Includes ALL the inside parts, all in more detail further down.

Cover Front: Cover seldom get more basic than this: clean, still fresh and attractive, a small surface scuff trace near the bottom edge and odd tiny corner tip crease. Little else, the lack of ringwear or rim impression a huge bonus, this is really impressive.

Cover Back: Largely the same, better if anything. The odd fine edge hairline surface crease and odd tiny burr trace to the panel end at the top (being very critical). This will prove difficult to find better.

Top Edge: Minimal traces of any rubbing and very straight. No woolying and no thins or splits (or repairs).

Bottom Edge: Very gentle friction traces but any woolying very tiny.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or thickening. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Quite solid, straight with any compression light. A couple of fine creases are present. This is a plain black spine with no text ever printed.

Corners: Minor traces or tip rubbing with the odd small tip crease. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong example of this simplistic but still fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This minimilist item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: again being critical. This inner is matt finished and polylined and is heavily made being twice the weight of some similar inners. Barely any traces of wear or creasing and the window circles remain crisp and very sharp, totally undamaged. All edges sound, one tiny central split has been neatly repaired by myself, you would barely even know. The lining clear with a couple of tiny nicks and minor crinkle. This robust but ultimately damage-prone inner will also prove difficult to find better.

The Cards Wallet Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a black unlined inner that holds the inserts together. Nothing printed, still very clean and fresh and all edges again sound. One seam had come unglued with I again fixed with a small smear of PVA. Barely any traces of wear or creasing.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT: This was printed in Germany as I guess all were. This is insert number X (10). Like all the inserts this has handling traces and gentle crinkle, no creasing as such and all edges crisp, sharp with no tears.

The Song Cards: All EXCELLENT: some with a tiny tip right tip crease. As per the lyric sheet above, they have handling traces. Black paper will show fingermarks, it is near unavoidable unless unhandled or with gloves - hardly likely in the real world. All look very nice indeed and again crisp with no tears or other creasing. All have been clearly handled but this evidence only really seen to any degree under angled light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: side one better still. A ver fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A gentle surface mark on side two with NO sound at all. Any others are very fine surface traces seen under angled light. A copy played a few times but offering superb sound throughout. A copy most collectors will enjoy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This masterclass in avant prog plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Brilliantly produced with real high fidelity sound values, this is a masterclass of creativity and has not dated at all. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and generally with due care – 40+ year old record will acquire the odd minor mark or two, but when they are no audio significance, why worry? Generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, still a favourite after all these years. Indeed, if I did not already own a superb copy, this one would be even be offered. This will prove difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
