LE JEU DE LA VERITE'

One evening, a group of society friends gather to attend a party. Their host suggests they play a game of confessions, in which each guest reveals some unknown truths about him or herself. In the course of the increasingly heated verbal exchanges, a man is murdered after having tried to blackmail his fellow guests. A police inspector appears unexpectedly on the doorstep and immediately takes charge of the situation. The game of truth has only just begun…

This unusual French film was directed by Robert Hossein, who, despite having made over a dozen films, is better known as an actor. Whilst the film is seductively stylish and strangely redolent of some of the early films of the French New Wave, its languorous pace, overly theatrical dialogue and static photography make it a somewhat luke-warm, lumbering affair, not the slick sophisticated piece that it deserves to be. The absurdity of the plot does give the film an odd, almost surreal edge, although the anti-Bourgeois messages that come across are hardly original. What the film does offer is some compelling performances from some of French cinema’s finest actors – notably Jean Servais, Paul Meurisse and Jean-Louis Trintignant, supported by an intense and pulsing jazz soundtrack composed by André Hossein.

Light cardboard laminated cover, in excellent condition, with both perfect flipbacks, seams and spine; very light ring wear front/back; light signature in vanishing red ink on the back cover.

Vinyl : VG

The vinyl looks has been often played with various visual little rubs producing some background noise, but not intruding the music. Please, listen to my soundclips.

Catalogue/Label :

EP FONTANA 460.807 ME original first and only french pressing.

Two very light micro-signatures in red ink appear on both labels. Please, look at my label scans.

GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light.

NM (Near Mint): Record has been opened, and probably played, but is in impeccable condition. I do not use "mint".

EX (Excellent): Has signs of use or storage, but still considered top collection quality. Jackets may display some very light wear; vinyl may have a few light sleeve marks only visible in the highest light. Sound will full and clear, with little if any noise (NOTE, some records are just pressed poorly).

VG+ (Very Good Plus): Still a great copy but has a bit more wear. Vinyl may have some light scuffs or scratches, but nothing deep. Jacket may have some ringwear or seamwear. Sound should be great, with minimal if any noise.

VG Very Good): A great play copy but clearly used. Vinyl will display many hairline scuffs or scratches, but will play with a tolerable amount of noise. Jacket may have splits and wear but will not be falling apart.

VG-(Very Good Minus): A used or worn copy, that has not been taken good care of. Vinyl will have many scuffs or scratches, but play through enjoyably despite audible background noise. Covers will have tears, splits, writing, or other issues.

G Fair, Poor: A very rough copy. Will play through without skipping unless otherwise noted, although records of this grade are sold AS-IS.
