Brief Info: Angelo Badalamenti’s brilliant music from the cult classic first Twin Peaks television series. Over time, Badalamenti has become very well-known for his music for David Lynch films, this arguably the very best of them all. For those who watched the original series first shown in 1990, they will remember the unsettling content and the eerie music that accompanied it. A master class of production and audio quality, the dynamic range of the vinyl will test out any hi-fi system. Mostly instrumental, haunting, even creepy jazz-style music with fantastic bass and synths – three songs are sung by the magnificent Julee Cruise – including the hit single ‘Falling’ which helped album sales. It proved particularly popular in Scandinavia and parts of Europe, the record was pressed in Germany to cater for all who still wanted vinyl at the time when the digital formats had largely taken over. The detail, warmth and range of the vinyl still has yet to be bettered, even with the odd sporadic click here-and-there – I have never heard a copy of this record without a few at best. But overall, this hardly played record impressed and really got my speaker drivers moving. This is possibly my favourite soundtrack ever, I am a huge fan of David Lynch and Badalamenti’s music, owning most of the pair’s work. A record seldom seen as a first issue, for those still unfamiliar, this is strongly recommended.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with smooth shiny coated surfaces. The back has the embossed ‘W’ Warner logo. Printed and made in Germany (universally pressed for the European market). Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Both clean, fresh with any edge creasing few and very fine, any marks or blemishes small and very faint, this famous still from the series will seldom be found better. The back shows all the original cast members and their characters.

Top Edge: Straight and unworn with text as per the spine, all unworn.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and very light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Superb almost as-made again. Solid, but thin, straight with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn, also superbly centred on the narrow depth.

Corners: Any tip rubs or blemishes tiny and light with better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A magnificent all-round example of this elusive early 1990’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a white soft-lined inner with little to fault. Any crinkle tiny and light with no real creasing at all. All edges naturally intact, the paper still white and unaged.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): a superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This album has incredible production and sound quality, pressing quality can vary however. This copy does have a small few sporadic clicks here-and-there from the odd microscopic spot seen with considerable scrutiny under a magnifier. But these are very few and little spoilt the overall listening experience of this amazing work. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is immensely high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This has some very deep bass and dynamics, you see your speaker drivers move even at relatively low volume. Intricate sound and fine details, any actual surface sounds are minimal indeed and overall, this is a clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises – the few, mostly light clicks apart. There are four moderate clicks on ‘Night Life in Twin Peaks’, one of the instrumentals, any others are less intrusive. As stated further up, I have yet to ever hear a copy of this on vinyl without a few contact sounds, and actually this is one of the best I have yet heard, and I think few will ever play silent. An album of sound peaks and troughs – some loud and intense, some quiet and fragile. So this is a challenging record in all aspects. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure – it was never originally pressed in the UK – German-made copies are the normal for this one. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has hardly been played, or even handled and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. The small few pressing clicks apart, little else spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this magnificent record. So not perfect, but it will still prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended as long as the odd contact sound is acceptable – and few can hope to avoid them totally.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
