Label/Format: Apple with matt, smooth surfaces, all text and format as seen. There are several variations of this label that came from 1971.

Label Conditions: Both practically as-made, very clean, fresh and attractive with barely a spindle trace to be seen. This came from a completists lot and debatable if this was even played at all.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Moderately scarce for a Beatles album. Not issued in the UK until 1976 as a full-length album. So fans had to rely on imported copies. Fewer survive in really clean and hardly played condition. This ripe Apple copy is absolutely superb.

The Beatles: John Lennon – lead, harmony and backing vocals; rhythm and acoustic guitars; keyboards (acoustic and electric pianos; mellotron, organ, clavioline), harmonica; Paul McCartney – lead, harmony and backing vocals; bass guitar, piano, mellotron, recorder; George Harrison – lead, harmony and backing vocals; lead, slide and acoustic guitars; organ, harmonica; Ringo Starr – drums and percussion. A host of other guest musicians and singers appear.

Brief Info: Another famous album all fans will know. Issued in the UK as a double 6-track EP early in December 1967, but the album version had to wait until 1976. In the United States a full-album version was initially issued in both mono and stereo. Imported copies meant this album still charted in the UK. Finding copies in lovely clean, and importantly hardly played condition are more difficult. This is a lovely all-round Apple label example with fantastic clean sound.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still. Vintage American covers are more delicate and wear-prone than European-style ones. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces that have a very gentle hint of texturing. Printed and made in the United States, includes the large, full-size 24-page book.

Cover Front: Clean, fresh and attractive, the only rubbing of note is near the very top right edge area and a small one near the bottom left edge. No deletion or import cuts or holes, the famous graphic unfaded and avoiding creasing or sticker issues. Less easy to find this clean, this remains attractive as seen.

Cover Back: A small and gentle dink on the bottom left corner tip, any rubbing gentle and light. The lack of ugly ring wear is always a major plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside with no toning or age spotting which these vintage cover often acquire. Note: the book was not attached to the centrefold on this release version and comes as a separate item that can be viewed and enjoyed more easily.

Top Edges: Both straight and flat with barely any wear and no splits – no repairs. That the same on all edges which is another considerable plus for these unforgiving and brittle card covers.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same with just a tiny, minute nick on the bottom back right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real folded edge, this unsplit again with only a little light rubbing near the top as mentioned already. The back entrance edges are very clean, sharp with hardly any trace of wear, even as seen viewed end-on. All guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, thick, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel, a very slight tilt to left being highly critical. All text is perfect and unworn as-seen, any rubbing to the main surface or folds small and light.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small with just the odd small hint of a dink. Mostly very fine shape retained, US corners were made different and seldom retain crisp shape, it’s simply the way they were manufactured.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this heavyweight, but fragile famous cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive and still fresh item should please many collectors. The original owner placed the record inside a Decca polylined inner sleeve to protect the surfaces, he wrote the album’s details on the top right corner, this is the only inner provided with this copy.

The Book: EXCELLENT(+): a 24-page large book consisting of colour and black and white film stills and cartoons. Solidly intact with the two original staples, this has aged little with minimal creasing and no tears. The odd gentle trace of discolour on the outer covers (set-off from the main cover), any rubbing to the pages minimal and very light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT: a fantastic visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy possibly unplayed until my mandatory sound check surface traces minuscule, even as seen critically under bright light. American vinyl does seem to mark more easily than European records, but this has hardly anything to fault and it will take a near remarkable example to better it. Visually a lovely vintage record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Apple pressing plays up to it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this 1971 pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has barely been played and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
