Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light / light, fine and quite faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Brief Info: Featuring the band leading skills of Al Kooper this is regarded by many to his finest hour and it proved to be his only album with the band. This debut was a somewhat overlooked pioneering classic in the UK, it blended jazz, rock and roll, psychedelia and classical music. Blood, Sweat and Tears used a large horn section to pulsating effect and paved the way for the likes of Chicago Transit Authority (later just Chicago) that went on to larger success. It sold moderately well in the United States and first albums with such a large ensemble was a rarity. Put simply: this is a fantastic album and for those more unfamiliar with this band’s early sound, this is not to be missed. A lovely original, this was repressed in 1973 on the Embassy label and then looked very different. First UK pressings are elusive and not seen often and this one is in very impressive condition – outside the US, this is an unheralded mini classic.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate. The back is smooth and unprotected. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the ‘Patents Pending’ text. Includes a CBS ‘Rock Machine Turns you On’ – ‘The Contemporary Sound is on CBD Records’ promotional sheet.

Lamination & Front: The front has (stating the obvious I guess), the original ventriloquist dummy artwork and here, it looks terrific. The laminate retains a lovely shine, freshness and clarity – a little mild rim dulling near the top edge but with minimal visibility with normal viewing. Any creasing few and faint and just a couple of very fine press marks near the bottom that hardly show. It retains total adhesion with no lifts or blisters and the graphic vivid and impressive.

Cover Back: A little mildish darkening on the spine edge and very faint traces of grubbiness (which is far too strong a word). Barely any real wear at all with only lightest possible hint of any ageing or reminder of it’s considerable age. Uncreased and barley any hint of rim marks, this simply looks superb and just right for a 1968 album cover.

Top Edge: One tiny surface chip, fully laminated, and even this retains impressive shine. Also remaining nicely straight.

Bottom Edge: Practically as above without the chip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with minimal traces of wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with only modest compression. This has some fairly modest toning and some text has rubbed towards the bottom area where present. I would say around 80 per cent is intact and easily readable. Not at all bad for a quite thin spine that was never laminate protected. Without this rubbing, I would have graded this cover more Excellent(+).

Corners: All corners are crisp, sharp and with minimal traces of any tip rubbing. All retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this scarce original UK cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This impressive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner with one corner crease and a little mild crinkle on the lower opposite. Two crisp window circles and solid clear lining. CBS records did not have plain inners so often but the inclusion of the promotional sheet was the most likely reason in this case.

The CBS Promotional Sheet: EXCELLENT: printed both sides on very thin pale grey coloured paper and guaranteed original. One central fold, clean and crisp. This promotes this same album as well as others from the back end of the 1960s.. The main side has lovely psychedelic-style artwork as can be seen on my picture.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks almost minuscule, very few and faint. Two fantastic labels and no vintage heavy-tracking record players have ruined this one. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very impressive record plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this first issue pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
