Description

Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section Contemporary Records (cat # C 3532) Original 1957 mono promo copy
This is a very nice copy of Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section released in 1957 on Contemporary Records (cat# C 3532). The "Rhythm Section" are Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, who at the time were the rhythm section for Miles Davis's quintet. According to legend, the album was recorded under enormous pressure: Pepper first learnt of it on the morning of the recording session, had never met the other musicians (though he admired them all), hadn't played for two weeks (according to the liner notes) or six months (according to Pepper's autobiography Straight Life), was playing on an instrument in a bad state of repair, and was suffering from a drug problem. (This story is clearly unreliable: the discography in Straight Life reveals, for instance, that he had recorded many sessions in the previous weeks, including one just five days before.) Whatever the truth of the recording's circumstances, it is considered a milestone in Pepper's career.
The cover is between VG and VG+ condition. Overall, the front cover art and rear text look very good with some light spots where the ink has rubbed off and some ring wear marks. The LP cover is structurally fine with no seam splits, a fair amount of edge wear and some light corner wear/dinging. The front and back cover and both LP labels have "Sample Record NOT FOR SALE" stamped on them. The deep groove vinyl is cut from the original D2 stampers and is VG but plays better at times - it has some marks and light scratches - many are inaudible, some are not. There is one deep scratch that is audible on the a-side that begins at the end of track 3 and continues throughout track 4. Please be aware that there are pops and clicks throughout playback (it varies at different points of the LP). To be clear, this is not a perfect copy of a rare LP - if you are ok with some background noise and ticks, then you will really appreciate this. The music is loud and alive and the noise never overwhelms the music. Please have a look at the photos!
