Description
Good copy of this 1959 release on HMV Records (ASD 314) with its original gold and cream label design. Christian Ferras (violin) plays Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1 in G minor, Op. 26 and Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole Op.21 with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Walter Susskind.
Condition is very good. The sleeve is close to perfect except for some loss of the laminate on the front and a slight discolouration of the back. There are no tears or seam splits and the spine is perfect.
The vinyl is in very good condition. It is clean and glossy and side 1 (Bruch) is unmarked. Side 2 (Lalo) has three or four nasty looking scratches but the only effect they have on playback is a few very quiet pops during the second movement. About halfway through the final movement of the Lalo there is a brief (less than 1 minute) burst of break-up of the sound but I can see no reason for this as the vinyl appears to be unmarked at this point. It is not "end of side distortion" as after it stops the remaining 3 or 4 minutes are absolutely as clear as a bell (and a demonstration of remarkable playing) until the very final orchestral tutti which does distort a fraction.
The Bruch side which looks flawless has a couple of problems on playback. Early in the first movement there are 5 or 6 soft clicks (although I cannot find a scratch at that point of the vinyl) and during the finale there is a degree of break up on the busiest and loudest orchestral tuttis.
However, this is quite a rare record in any condition and for the most part this copy can be played without too much discomfort to the ears.
