Description
Welcome! Here is an early German press of the first Ash Ra Tempel album. On this eponymous debut, the Ash Ra Tempel line-up was Hartmut Enke, Manuel Göttsching, and Klaus Schulze. We cannot call this a true first press, since the catalogue number is OMM 556.013; a first FIRST press would be OMM 56.013. The first seventeen Ohr albums initially had a five-digit catalogue number (56.xxx); in late 1971 or early 1972, Ohr renumbered these and subsequent albums as the six-digit 556.xxx. But that extra 5 is the only thing that distinguishes a first-press and not-quite-first-press Ash Ra Tempel album.
Matrix numbers and mother/stamper codes are:
Side 1: ST-OMM-56.013-A PF is scratched in. There is no mother/stamper that I can see.
Side 2: ST-OMM-56.013-B PF is scratched in. I can identify a single ‘1’ but that’s it for mother/stamper numbers.
Using the Record Collector grading system, what do we have here?
Sleeve: The sleeve grades EX. (The Italian dealer that I bought this from several years ago graded it M-, but I’ll be more conservative.) As you may know, this is a VERY delicate sleeve, with a double opening of thin panels right down the center of the front (captured in one of my photos). And really, this is about as nice as you will see this sleeve. There are minor creases to the lower edges of the album cover leaves, but this is really minimal and probably near-unavoidable after so many years. There is only the most minor of surface wear on the inside leaves; ditto for the corners, spine, and back of the cover. The color is strong!
Vinyl: The vinyl grades Mint-. It looks and plays beautifully! There are hardly any wispy hairlines.
Labels: Both Side 1 and Side 2 labels are lovely. There is no spindle tracking and no wear to either label.
Inner Sleeve: This album has its original plain white inner sleeve, with the “waxy” sort of finish seen on other German Ohr albums. There are some minor age spots, but no side splits.
And, in the end: This is a terrific example of the first Ash Ra Tempel album, even with the very minor creasing to the sleeve panels. If you are reading this, you do not need me to tell you to set the controls for the heart of the sun with this album! One of the best Krautrock albums ever, IMHO.
