Atomic Rooster : In Hearing Of A1U / B1U 1st Press 1971 Pegasus Label

This underrated (in my opinion) first pressing plays to a fantastic standard with no actual interference.  There is just a modicum of very light static on a couple of tracks but it is so quiet and totally non-intrusive.  The clarity and depth of the audio on both sides is so impressive and it is obvious it has not been overplayed as the original sonic quality is still very much there.  The vinyl is visually very impressive with only some light hairlines and there is nothing that affects the stunning quality of the audio on offer here.

The gatefold is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the inner sleeve has been well preserved also.

As it is a genuine first press it has an A1/B1 matrix and rough textured labels.

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition with a very strong glossy sheen and there are no scratches.  There are some faint hairlines and a handful of hairline scuffs on S2 but these are minor and have no affect on the superb audio.  They can only be seen when you hold the vinyl at a certain angle under a strong bright light.  The run out grooves are very clean and the rough textured Pegasus labels are unmarked and have only a little spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on 'Breakthrough' plays perfectly with no intrusion and French's opening vocal is equal to that.  The following quieter piano section has no background and it continues to play with stunning clarity.  Its a staccato type track and each note is so clean and precise and from start to finish there is just no interference not even on the fade out.  It also plays with great power and definition.  A Mint start in my opinion.

The quiet build up intro on 'Break The Ice' plays so clearly with only one minor static tick and a small number of barely audible dust ticks.  It's just what you would expect to hear on vinyl basically, the playback is stunning.  As the volume increases the audio is 'as new' and this standard is kept up throughout.  In fact I have never heard a stronger version!  By this stage Cann had of course left the group but he certainly wrote a great track here!  Every vocal and instrumental section plays with sublime quality and Mint- is more than deserved.

'Decision / Indecision' plays with great clarity throughout that is the first thing that needs to be said.  There is just a little background static on the intro and first vocal but it is very quiet and totally non-intrusive and does not detract from the audio at all.  It proceeds to play with very impressive audio and it's only the quieter moments that have a minor touch of mega quiet static which is intermittent anyway.  Perhaps I'm making too big a deal out of it but as my regulars know I do 'list' any background even if minor.  The sonic quality still cannot be faulted and Near Mint is still an honest assessment of the audio.

'A Spoonful Of Bromide Helps The Pulse Rate Go Down' plays with incredible power from the get go.  This instrumental is of course heavy on percussion and it does not disappoint!  There is not one negative here, it plays with phenomenal audio from start to finish with literally no intrusion, and 'as new' sums it up perfectly.  The power and depth here is breathtaking and Mint is an easy grade to give.

The intro on 'Black Snake' once again demonstrates how well this vinyl has been cared for.  It plays so clearly with barely any static and the first verse is just as clean.  It continues in the same manner - this isn't a loud track and yet the clarity cannot be faulted in any way and the mid instrumental is a fine example of that.  Running at 6 minutes exactly there is NO interference and Mint- is again deserved.  Ps another fade out that plays with 100% perfect audio!

'Head In The Sky' has just one minor static on the first note and then plays with stunning power from then onwards.  The vocals are strong and clear and the instrumentation is superb!  The Hammond organ mid instrumental could not play any better and that applies to every section really.  An all-powerful Mint- track in every way and I'm not sure the minus is necessary truth be told!

Another instrumental in 'The Rock' and it plays with great clarity and warmth from the very start.  It proceeds in the same way as the previous tracks with no ticks, clicks or pops.  A smidgeon of barely audible static in a couple of places but totally non-intrusive of course.  Mint- is fair.

'The Price' ends this fine (underrated?) album with, you guessed it, outstanding quality from start to finish.  There are no ticks, clicks etc and only a touch of mega light static in a couple of places - again so quiet and scarcely worth a mention.  The depth and resonance of the audio is STUNNING and even more so when you consider it is the final track on the side.  There is no distortion and the clarity cannot is pretty much perfect also.  This is easily a Mint- conclusion to this super clean vinyl.

In summary this first pressing plays with stunning quality and with no actual interference.  There are no clicks, pop or jumps and only the bare minimum of non-intrusive static on a couple of tracks and as stated I only mentioned this 'static' to be 100% 'complete' in my grading, it is so so quiet!  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is I believe equal to how it would have sounded when first released back in '71 and there is also no distortion.  A superb album in so many ways!

The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve

The E.J. Day cover remains in excellent condition with only very minimal wear and this is mainly restricted to the edges which have some rubbing but certainly not an excessive amount.  The wide spine is in great condition with hardly any wear on the corners and the right hand corners have only minimal wear.  The opening edge is also in superb shape with barely any wear.  The front cover is very clean with only a couple of small faint marks and the back cover if anything is even more impressive!  The inside of the gatefold is immaculate without any marking.  A fine example overall.

The plain white die-cut inner has no side splits or tears and only a couple of faint spots and minor creasing.  It has Made In England and the Patent No. 1.125,555 printed in blue on one side.
