Rare deluxe Prague record club issue of this experimental opera and early microtonal masterpiece. This work features the quarter tone piano, a unique instrument designed by the composer which has 2 keyboards, one on top of the other, tuned in a difference of a 1/4-tone. The performers are the Prague National Theatre Chorus and Orchestra, Jiri Pokorny on quarter-tone piano, chorus master Milan Maly, and conductor Jiri Jirous. Includes spiral bound booklet with photos and extensive notes in Czech.

Czech innovator Alois Haba studied under Vitezslav Novak and Franz Schrecker and was one of the earliest Western microtonal composers, writing his first quarter tone composition in 1917. He was influenced by folk music, worked with Ivan Wyschnegradsky, and helped develop many new microtonal instruments including quarter tone pianos, harmoniums, guitars, clarinets, and trumpets, and a sixth tone harmonium. Haba's work is one of the earliest and most important contributions to the modern microtonal music tradition of Julian Carrillo, Harry Partch, Ferruccio Busoni, Henk Badings, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Glenn Branca, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, John Eaton, James Tenney, Easley Blackwood, Emil Richards, Teo Macero, Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Lucier, and Joe Maneri.
