"This is quite possibly my favorite jazz recording, so excuse me if I'm a bit hyperbolic. Nonetheless, this album not only contains some of the best arranged/written jazz I have ever heard, but the musicianship is impressive. Some of my favorite Dolphy solos are on this recording (I've found I like Dolphy more on other people's stuff than on his own), the drumming is super-inspired and creative and absolutely everybody is more than up to the task at hand. In addition, this is one of the more varied albums, in terms of feel, keys, time signatures, whatever . . . "
No, that's not me trying to sell this vinyl LP. That's a reviewer of the music on this LP riffing on the Amazon site. But he's right. It's sometimes challenging music, with infinitely varied cross rhythms, but whatever Hill does as leader is beautifully supported and developed by the stellar sidemen on this 1964 session: Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Eric Dolphy on alto sax etc., Joe Henderson on tenor sax fronting the sextet, backed up masterfully by Richard Davis on bass and Anthony Williams on drums - and even though he was only 18 at the time of this recording, he is in his element and never left behind by the masters of jazz in front of him.
This is the 1979 Japanese reissue of the original BlueNote LP. The LP is in very good condition: I had to take care of it as it was a present from my wife 40 years ago! The cover has the mark of a small price sticker top right, slightly scuffing on far left of top edge, and gentle wear on the corners, but it's in even better condition than I was when I was 40!
