Cover: vg+ (radio station stamps and sticker on front and back) Dense textures and percussive noise fill this great and rare album on Ilhan Mimaroglu's label, with essential early electronic academic "dance music" composed for choreographer Mimi Garrard's experimental dance works. As you would expect, the pieces are more rhythmically-centered than typical abstract early electronic works. Arel's Mimiana II is made from sine wave generators and uses microtones to establish "an intentionally blurred pitch relation"; Mimiana III insanely mixes 7 different tempos to match the 7 dancers in the piece, and was created using tape-manipulated Buchla synthesizer sounds. Semegen's Arc incorporates microtones and also uses the Buchla synth as its exclusive sound source. Arel's works were created at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center (legendary home of Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Milton Babbitt, Mario Davidovsky, etc); Semegen's piece was made at Bell Telephone Labs (where Max Mathews, John R. Pierce, Jean Claude Risset, Newman Guttman, and James Tenney pioneered computer music in the 60s) and SUNY Stonybrook Electronic Studios.

Arel was a Turkish composer who became an early member of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center in the 50s and 60s; he went on to found and direct the electronic music studios at Yale and SUNY Stonybrook. Semegen studied under Arel, Ussachevsky, Witold Lutoslawski, Samuel Adler, Robert Gauldin, and Burrill Phillips, and worked with Otto Luening at Columbia-Princeton; she was also a sound engineer at the Collection of World Music at Columbia University where she worked with field recordings of folk music. The Buchla synth, an early Moog competitor, was created by Donald Buchla; it was used by Morton Subotnick, Douglas Leedy, Paul Beaver, Bernard Krause, Ichiyanagi, etc. This lp contains microtonal music in the tradition of composers like Harry Partch, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Glenn Branca, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, John Eaton, Alois Haba, Henk Badings, Julian Carrillo, etc. Other references for this lp: Gottfried Michael Koenig, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bernard Parmegiani, Pierre Henry, musique concrete, Aphex Twin, Mu-Ziq, Autechre, Squarepusher, Jean Michelle Jarre, Tom Dissevelt, Tod Dockstader, Jean-Jaques Perrey, Gershon Kingsley...
