J.S. BACH 6 SONATAS & PARTITAS for Unaccompanied Violin by NATHAN MILSTEIN, Capitol PCR-8370 MONO, U.S. original first pressing on the 1957 green-and-gold “FDS” full dimensional sound label.  This is not the later 60’s reissues on the Capitol rainbow label that some eBay sellers claim to be the original.  In fact, this has the earliest dead wax matrices (so-called “stamper” numbers) I have seen.  This is one of the most sought-after Bach sonatas & partitas set that goes for up to $1,000 in a near mint condition.  This is the very copy that I sold on eBay a couple of months ago but the winning bidder failed to pay, and I am relisting this item.  Here is the link to the sale reported by popsike.com:

Vinyl Condition: 

Side 1:  Visually Excellent because of several small non-feelable sleeve marks and some longer non-feelable sleeve marks visible only under a strong light.  The label shows 1 spindle trail. The vinyl has FULL gloss and is clean.  It looks NM under a normal light.  It plays NM- with my stereo cartridge and should play NM with a mono cartridge.

Side 6:  Visually NM- because of few non-feelable sleeve marks visible only under a strong light.  The label shows a couple of spindle trails. The vinyl has FULL gloss and is clean.  It plays NM- with my stereo cartridge and should play NM with a mono cartridge.

Side 2:  Visually NM with a couple of spindle trails and a couple of sleeve marks in the run-out groove in the dead wax; it plays NM- with my stereo cartridge and should play NM with a mono cartridge.

Side 5:  Visually NM- with no spindle trails and a couple of sets of sleeve marks visible only under a strong light not affecting play; it plays NM- with my stereo cartridge and should play NM with a mono cartridge.

Side 3:  Visually VG+ because of a 1/8 inch feelable scratch on track 3 and two 1/16 inch feelable scratches on track 4.  There are no spindle trails and a couple sets of light sleeve marks visible only under a strong light; it plays NM- with my stereo cartridge, EXCEPT for about 30 clicks during the 1/8 inch scratch on track 3 and a few clicks during the two 1/16 scratches on track 4.  This side may play much better with a mono cartridge.

Side 4:  Visually NM with a couple of spindle trails and a couple of sleeve marks visible only under a strong light, which do not affect play.  It plays NM- with my stereo cartridge and should play NM with a mono cartridge.

Box Condition:  The box is solid and clean but the top of the box has cleanly split off from the bottom of the box.  There are also tiny bits of wear where the laminated photo of Mr. Milstein ends and the black part of the box begins on the front of the box.  I would grade the box as Excellent because of the top of the box being separated from the bottom.  The original Capitol FDS paper inner sleeves are solid, crisp and clean, except for the catalog number written by the previous owner at the bottom right corner of each inner sleeve.  They also have yellowed a bit with age.  The foldout insert with notes by Karl Geiringer is like new, except for the yellowing with age.

GRADING POLICY FOR LPS:  Grading is for the cover/box and for the record.  The record may have two grades, one for visual grade and another for play grade.  I have never played some of these records and some records may only be visually graded.  The grading for the record will be relative to a mint record of the period manufactured by the same record company.  Therefore, the standards will not be the same between, for example, a Japanese Pioneer/Holland Philips/German Teldec pressing of the early 80’s (which are on super quiet vinyl) and a U.S. ABC/MCA pressing of the late 70’s (which are typically noisier).  A Near Mint graded late 70’s U.S. ABC or MCA record will play with considerably more background noise caused by cheaper vinyl material than a Near Mint graded early 80’s Japanese Pioneer, Holland Philips or German Teldec record. 

SHIPPING POLICY:  All records have been cleaned on my VPI 16.5 record cleaning machine and will be placed in a poly-lined or rice paper sleeves, unless the records are sealed.  The LP will be packed in a cardboard box LP mailer manufactured by ULINE.  The record will be placed outside of the LP outer jacket so that it will not damage the cover during transit. 

For U.S. destinations, the shipping cost for 1 record delivered via US Postal Service Parcel Post will be $6 if your State touches the Pacific Ocean, $8 if your State or Commonwealth touches the Atlantic Ocean, and $7 if your State touches neither Ocean.  For each additional record, add $1 for each for up to 6 records.  (Each LP mailer will fit up to about 6 records.)  For example, for a boxed set containing 3 records, please just add $2 to the shipping cost of the first record.  If you would like your item shipped using a different option offered by the US Post Office (e.g., Priority Mail or Express Mail) or a private courier service (e.g., FedEx or UPS), please contact me.
