Another great album from B.B. King, this time with a good story in "Lucille". Lucille was the name B.B. gave to all his black Gibson guitars. This isn't the most essential B.B. King album, but it certainly shouldn't be ignored. Horns and bass, gentlemen. "Lucille" is my pick, naturally.

Although B.B. King's live material trumps the vast majority of his studio albums, Lucille is among his finest studio works. In fact, pretty much anything King worked on in the late sixties and early seventies is blues gold. Lucille finds King at the top of his abilities. His singing is powerful, full of emotion (he sings like he means it), and perfectly clear. His guitar playing is classic B.B. King: full of delicious bends, intense vibrato, and beautiful phrasing. Most casual listeners might find Lucille a tough nut to crack. The tracks on this album are not among his signature tracks with the exception of "Lucille," but even this track is rarely heard due to the relative success of "Sweet Sixteen," "Sweet Little Angel," and his defining track, "The Thrill is Gone," all found on other albums. But as with many of his albums from his repertoire of this time period, these overlooked tracks are often glorious and show King's mastery of the blues.
Surprisingly, I do not enjoy "Lucille" as much as others. It is a lengthy track in which King complements his playing with a spoken anecdote about how his guitar became "Lucille." His goal here is to not only tell a story, but also to show how well he can speak through his guitar. I like this track because King is not known for speaking rather than singing but I love his vocals just as much as his guitar playing abilities and without his usual emotion heavy vocals, the track moves slowly. "Watch Yourself" is a perfect example of how his singing influences the track. As a fast moving blues number, King plants well timed and perfectly executed guitar solos alongside vocals that start loud and just get louder. Throw in some saxophone and this track is complete from opening to end. "No Money, No Luck Blues" is the slowest blues cut on Lucille and should delight those looking for slow bends and a great lyrics tied to great vocals. Of the tracks penned by King himself, "Rainin' All the Time" is my favorite. Piano makes an appearance here to support King's efforts.
Lucille may not have B.B. King's best melodies, but it certainly has some of his best playing. His guitar is spot on and his vocals are wonderful. As is the case with many of his albums from that time period, his singing verges on passionate screaming at times. Saxophones support many of the tracks throughout the album better than one might expect and do not detract from the vocals or the guitar. The soul and rhythm and blues influences have a way of taking Lucille in a direction I wish it would not, but this only occurs on two tracks. A fantastic album from a blues giant.
High Points: "Watch Yourself," "No Money, No Luck Blues," and "Rainin' All the Time"

The title cut is a total classic and amongst the greatest of the great blues songs of all time. The man, the myth, and the legend. All ten plus minutes of the tribute to that bad girl are incredible. Some of the King's most inspired playing ever.
The rest of the album is alright. Not really bad but not great either. Just sort or there taking up space enough to be able to give the title cut a proper release on an album.
B.B. has released far better albums, but if you can find a vinyl copy of Lucile its totally worth picking up as it sounds so good on vinyl.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Note: the previous owner taped the two separated edges of the shrink wrap on the back panel by using multiple pieces of clear (now yellowed) scotch tape. We stress that the tape is juist barely touching the visible, external part of the cover. This can probably easily be removed, but we did not attempt to (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .
- Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
