Description
This auction is for a genuine original press photograph of the Beatles handsigned "to Bob. George Harrison" by George Harrison. My next door neighbour, Bob Lea, is a retired press photographer who worked for a Birmingham Press Agency (Caters Photographic, Bearwood, Birmingham) from the 1950's until 1990. He has been going through his things and has asked me to sell some pictures of the Beatles that he took when they played at the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre on the 10th November 1963. He had three original prints of the "Beatles Disguised as Policemen" which he took outside the Theatre in Birmingham. This picture was taken for the Wolverhampton Express and Star and possibly the Daily Herald, but he can't remember if it was published.
This photograph is the last of the three original glossy 10" X 8" prints (I have sold the other two unsigned prints on ebay previously) and bears the Caters Photographic stamp and date stamp on the back. The date stamp reads "10 NOV 1963". Bob changed the last year digit with biro because the agency made up the date stamp incorrectly. I looked for information on the web to authenticate this information and found this site:

The agency is no longer in existence and all diaries and negatives have been destroyed. Bob does not have any negatives as all rights belonged to Caters Photographic. This is the last and best of three original prints that were probably the only ones in existence. Although Bob says that other photographers were present at the same time, many of them have now passed away! I have been unable to find this image or similar ones through search engines on the internet. This print is in good clean condition with only a few minor storage creases. The print has a mark on John's right eye, but this is present on all the prints.
Amy, Bob's wife, used to and still does have her hair done in Solihull by the same hairdresser that cut George Harrison's hair, who was also a friend of George's. She asked the hairdresser to ask George to sign it for Bob, which he did - this is a genuine signature, no written provenance - it was who you knew back in the 1960's that mattered, and it certainly wasn't done with investment potential in mind.
This print will be sent special delivery in a heavy duty envelope with card stiffeners. This is a special opportunity to buy a rare and unique piece of Beatles memorabilia and the ideal Christmas present for a Beatles fan called Bob!
Further info: After visiting her hairdresser today (29/11/06), Amy has now confirmed that the photograph was signed by George Harrison whilst he was recording ideas for his comeback album Cloud Nine at his friend Jeff Lynne's (ELO) home recording studio in Meriden. This is why he was in the Midlands. The album was released in 1987, so the photograph was signed during late 1986 or early 1987.
