MEGA MONSTER rarity here from the early 70's - it's been said "1971?" with a question mark by the online Bee Jay Records discography, and judging from the songs covered on this album, that's probably about right. This is one of many "sampler" albums put out by the Florida-based Bee Jay label, showcasing dozens of local bands who otherwise didn't get their music released. The majority of these tracks run about 1 to 2 minutes, and are abbreviated cover versions of popular songs in order to show how the bands would sound if you chose to have them open for Iron Butterfly when they came to your club. But a few bands get to lay down full-length songs, some band originals, and this is where the album really shines. East Coast Supply's "Love Machine" is a fast fiery guitar rocker with lotsa blazing soul fire gee-tar, double-tracked vocals, and questionably masochistic lyrics like "you're a love machine and I'll try to be your gun." The Electric Philharmonic do a spirited heavy cover of the Guess Who's "Bus Rider" with dual flamethrower guitars, but strangely enough censor themselves by singing "I'm so awful doggone glad I'm not in your shoes" for some reason. And don't miss the fuzz-laden buzzing stoner psych take on Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl" by Ivanho, who lay down a ripping cool fuzz guitar solo that I wish went on about 3 minutes longer. Guess I'll have to book 'em to get the full show. Other bands featured include Sandpaper Castle, Epicure, In the Beginning, Raintree County, Salvation Alliance, Wooden Spoon, Exit, Yocum Mucoy, Greased Lightnin' and Brewed. Hairy Florida garage rock started here.
