BEETHOVEN BICENTENNIAL COLLECTION 1770-1970, 10 Volumes, 50 Records - Karajan, Kempff, Fournier, Ferras, Anda, Szeryng, Oistrakh, Schneiderhan - DG Special Edition (Rca Pressings), Complete with 276-page Full-Color Book
A monumental project of DG, Time/Life, and Rca, in 1970, to celebrate all of Beethoven's music. Yes, it is 10 volumes deep, some 50 records strong, complete with a wonderful book of near 300 pages about the life and times of the maestro.
Here is how the music in the volumes breaks-out:
1. SYMPHONIES AND OVERTURES: Part One, all of the performances from Karajan and the Berlin, symphonies 1-6.
2. SYMPHONIES AND OVERTURES: Part Two, again Karajan and the Berlin, symphonies 7, 8 and 9.
3. CONCERTOS: On piano, we find Kempff's brilliant performances; on violin, Christian Ferras.
4. PIANO SONATAS: All by Kempff.
5. MUSIC FOR THE STAGE: No idea here, because the box is sealed.
6. CHORAL MUSIC: Again, sealed.
7. STRING QUARTETS: Again, sealed.
8. MUSIC FOR PIANO: Performances by Kempff, Geza Anda, and Jorge Demus.
9. CHAMBER MUSIC: The performances of Kempff, Szeryng, and Fournier.
10. MUSIC FOR VIOLIN & CELLO: From Kempff and Menuhin; Kempff & Fournier; Ostrakh; and Anda, Schneiderhan, & Fournier.
A colossal enterprise, and in very decent shape.
All of the boxes are fine, nothing untoward in the least, with three of them still in shrink-wrap. Of the record surfaces, the only problem box is Volume 1, which has a number of surfaces marked, perhaps 30% are near mint, the rest scratched.
Of the remaining 90 sides, the "Waldstein" is badly scratched, one small smudge exists on another side, 5 sides have light rubber mat scuffs. Of the remaining 83 sides, 30 are factory sealed and the 53 others look like new, very pretty, in fact, and hardly played, if played at all. Book is outstanding, just a wee bit bowed (nothing serious) without even a hint of any yellowing of the pages.
A classic study of Beethoven, one, I dare say, that may never be matched.
