The lovely Bettye Swann, née Betty Jean Champion, possessed a warm, tender voice and a capability to inject a touching, subdued melancholy into every recording she made.

Born in Louisiana, Swann made her first recordings for the California based Money Records. In 1967 she hit pay dirt with the upbeat, uptown soul beater "Make Me Yours"; self-penned (as much of her Money material is), this No. 1 R&B smash breezed big city vibes while still riding a solid, funky beat. "Fall In Love With Me" was very much a continuation of "Make Me Yours" musically, with those same brassy arrangments and delightful female backing vocals.

A tremendous take on The Temptations' "Don't Look Back" - where the bass and baritone sax play the main lick in unison - precedes Bettye's very first recording, the traditionally styled, mid-tempo, shufflin' fingersnapper "Don't Wait Too Long" (one of the very few tracks on which Bettye can be heard singing in the 'hard soul' vein), after which Swann explores the outer reaches of love sickness on the gutwrenching pleader "Don't Take My Mind". Side A of her first album ends with a nice cover of Ray Charles' "I Can't Stop Loving You", a tune that, compared to the wealth of original material here, seems somewhat obsolete.

Kicking off the flipside is the deliciously struttin', horn heavy "I Think I'm Falling In Love", sounding like a gutsy Motown exercise with another lovely, understated vocal on top off a driving groove. Following the sweet, melodic ballad "You Gave Me Love" (more gorgeous, esotheric backing vocals here) comes the all-out barn burner "The Heartache Is Gone", one of those terrific 'you GO galfriend' anthems. A fat, greasy rhythm juiced up with piles of brass and one of Swann's more aggressive vocal deliveries: "The hurt has ended, my heart has mended, don't feel offended, no use to pretend it, the heartache is gone!' Hello!

The mood is decidedly bleaker on the lamenting "I Will Not Cry", a fabulously arranged, loping ballad, and Bettye takes it all the way down to Bluesville on "What Is My Life Coming To".

But her first magnificent full lenght effort ends on a majestic, uplifting note through a goosebump inducing rendition of Sam Cooke's legendary opus "A Change Is Gonna Come".

Bettye Swann moved on to Capitol in 1968, churning out another two must-have soul albums, those being more in the Southern Soul/Country Soul vein.

(a)           WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (NOTE: minor discoloration noted on the vinyl, most likely due to inconsistent vinyl quality used; nothing significant).

(b)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP;  HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++(A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-          Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-          Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.   (nothing significant)

-          Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged

-          Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam and the opening side

-          Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)

-          Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel
