With the exception of one selection ("Pennies from Heaven") left over from his 1956 record The Boss of the Blue, the music on this album was all recorded in September 1959. Veteran blues singer Big Joe Turner returns to his roots, belting out blues and early standards while accompanied by an octet arranged by Ernie Wilkins. Among the key sidemen are the great tenor Coleman Hawkins, trombonist Vic Dickenson, trumpeter Paul Ricard and altoist Jerome Richardson; and the highlights include "Nobody in Mind," "Rebecca" and "Don't You Make Me High." An excellent outing for Turner, whose boisterous style would be largely unchanged over his half-century career.

This is one of Big Joe Turner's best albums, from the peak period of his career (The "Atlantic" years, 1950-1962). This is what comes to mind when the phrase "Blues vocals" is mentioned. This album, almost as much as its author - is a monument to a genre, almost an institution in itself. The role of Joe Turner in the development of modern Blues and Rock and Roll cannot possibly be overestimated. His towering (literally) presence continues even today, almost 20 years from his death. There is no way to properly appraise Joe Turner's influence among the early 50's "Jump Blues" musicians and aficionados. Just one of his songs alone (Shake, Rattle and Roll) played a pivotal role in the development of modern American role (even in a dramatically abridged, butchered versions, as rendered by Bill Haley an Elvis Presley). Atlantic Records, that powerhouse of 1950's blues, soul and R&B is pretty much a house that Big Joe had built. Please note: Many Atlantic original master tapes were destroyed in a New York  fire in the early 1970s. This is one of the titles irretrievably lost in that fire. If you wish to hear how magnificent this album really is, go for the original or very early pressings – forget about the compact disc, which is made from the later (digitally enhanced production or back-up) tape and sounds awful, EVEN with all kinds of digital “baking”.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        THIS ALBUM COMES FROM THE ESTATE OF JON XAVIER CORBIN, A MAJOR AND HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL BALTIMORE-BASED JAZZ COLLECTOR FROM THE TURN OF THE '50s/'60s DECADE AND HAS A NUMBER OF HIS EX-LIBRIS AND OTHER MARKINGS:

-        Cover has two ex-libris stamps on the back panel

-        Two filing codes stamped on the back panel

-        Two filing codes written in red marker on the back panel

-         Cover has a tape residue in all four corners (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape); PLEASE NOTE: the cover does NOT have split seams: the corners were  taped merely as a precautionary measure.

-        Front cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.     (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
