Virtually perfect, NM vinyl on Side 1, viewed under hard bright light. Side 2 has a very few light sleeve marks that are inaudible. Labels are immaculate both sides.

COVER is VG+
Clean, crisp, solid cover - Front is very close to Near Mint. Back shows wear - *most of the apparent 'wear' seen in back cover photo is actually in the artwork - on all copies, as any photo of a SEALED back cover will instantly confirm - but there is somel ring wear at top and bottom edges and a bit more wear also, mostly along edge. Lightly bumped bottom corner tips. No creases, writing, soil, cut outs, drill hole or other marks. Seams and spine 100% intact with no splits.

She came up out of dirt and hardship in Alabama, lived in it as a child and found herself fighting it by singing it out of her in the Blues Era of the late 40's and early 50's. she shined shoes and washed floors when things got tough, but like Muddy Waters and B.B. King during the lean years, she was always somewhere, belting out the Blues and waiting for the tide to turn. And now it has. Big Mama Thornton is riding it into the growing acclaim of a growing public. ” —Leonard Aronson, from the back cover.

As we all know, Janis Joplin, who had ample opportunity, before moving from Port Arthur TX to San Francisco, to see and hear Willie Mae 'Big Mama' Thornton perform in Texas (Big Mama had been in Houston since 1948), modeled her sound and delivery mainly from Big Mama Thornton. Not only was Janis completely knocked out and won over by Big Mama's voice and style; she made a point of building her own sound after Thornton's impassioned, emoting, growling style. As it turned out both Janis and Big Mama would end up in San Francisco - Janis in 1966, Thornton in 1969.

Joplin gave her the recognition she deserved by having Big Mama open for her in concert - and sharing royalties for "BALL & CHAIN" with Thornton when the original labels never did. Joplin found her singing voice through Thornton, who praised Joplin's version of Thornton's own composition "Ball '& Chain", saying, "That girl feels like I do."

"Ball & Chain" and "Summertime" are both on this album. If you want to hear where Janis got it from, this is the place. Thornton's immortal "Hound Dog" is also here, along with her inimitable interpretations of "Rollin' Stone", "Born Under a Bad Sign", "Let's Go Get Stoned" and even Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" (hearkening back to her Gospel roots). Though these are obvious highlights, there is not a single clunker on this powerful, consummate album.
