BLACK CAT BONES - Barbed Wire Sandwich ORIG Decca Nova LP SDN 15 (UK, Stereo,1970)
Happy to present the classic ‘Barbed Wire Sandwich’ from Black Cat Bones in its original UK Nova release from 1970. This is a heavy album with Leaf Hound connections and a tune in ‘Death Valley Blues’ which bears an uncanny resemblance to ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’ by Zeppelin - make your mind up which came first?
The front laminated Decca Nova sleeve was printed by Senol Printing Ltd and is in a solid if not spectacular state with no major faults. It shows around a half dozen little spine creases to the left edge, a more defined crease to the front top left and an established creasing pair to the bottom front left corner. No ‘thumb’ creases though and the back is completely uncreased. There is only minor edge rubbing to the top and bottom edges, while the spine is near perfect bar some discolouration at the bottom. All text is fully legible and there are no splits. Sits nice and flat. Light ring impression visible when tilted both front and back but not intrusive. No real feathering of the opening edges just one or two small nicks. Rear of sleeve is slightly yellowed and shows some ‘grub rub’ but not ugly. A stain has encroached into the bottom rear right corner (see photo). Corners still pretty good and laminate strong with no peeling. Overall a nice, if not beautiful example, but still nice and defined. I’m going VG (Very Good - a proper VG, not battered and still presentable).
The aqua blue Nova labels are in excellent condition with only mild spindle evidence on either side. NO writing, stickers, residue. No dirt or tears.
The medium weight vinyl is in a very pleasing condition. There are a few wispy scuffs between the 2 sides and some (not many) light thin hairlines when examined closely. Also note a couple of little nicks to Side 2. All markings are small and there’s no embedded dirt or grime. It looks EX- (Excellent Minus) on Side 1 and VG+ (Very Good Plus) on S2. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and audibly is great, bar some light ticks to the quiet ‘Feeling Good’ and some more throughout the equally quiet ‘Four Women’ - could well be improved with a machine clean. Other than these two tracks, which still sound the best part of fine to my ears, the rest of the LP is a heavy blast with no discernible audio impediment. There’s no loud pops, only light surface, generally quiet track divides, NO distortion or loss of clarity. Obviously NO jumps or repeats.
All in all a great copy of this important rare heavy classic. I OUTLINE ALL ISSUES!! Low start, no reserve.
