Much of The Black Dog's ambient-focused output of recent years has tended towards the hazy, clandestine and evocative, with the long-serving Sheffield trio drawing inspiration from Yorkshire's Brutalist architecture (the This Brutal Life series) and member Martin Dust's sideline as a photographer of concrete-clad buildings (Music For Photographers). In contrast, Loud Ambient was inspired by their collective love of Rothko's bold and colourful paintings. As a result, it's bright, melodious and maximalist in the best possible way, with the trio recalling not only the group's own joyous IDM works of the 1990s, but also the more sun-bright end of the ambient techno spectrum, their collective love of dubby techno and the more cosmic, considered end of the electronic disco spectrum. Joyful!
