Description

BLACK RANDY & METROSQUAD – I Slept In An Arcade b/w Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose. Danger House KY-724. Issued in 1979. PICTURE SLEEVE:  VG++, ¾ wraparound style, with the back of the sleeve covering half of the disc; referred to as the 1.5 sleeve. The original release did not come with a paper innersleeve for the disc, included here by me, but did come in an outer plastic sleeve, which is included. VINYL:  EXCELLENT, play graded, large hole center. Labels are black print on white stock. As the label shut down not long after this release this was most likely the only pressing for this single. MEMBERS:  Black Randy, Pat Garrett, Bob Deadwyler, David Brown, Joe Ramirez, and Joe Nanini. DESCRIPTION:  Black Randy, born Jon Morris (January 5, 1952 - November 11, 1988 of AIDS), was the legendary leader of west coast art-punk soul band Black Randy And The Metrosquad. He was well known for irrational frustrating antics, infantilism, practical jokes involving feces, bizarre punk songs about gay prostitution, drugs, and Marlon Brando and avant-garde approach to music. He helped start and run Dangerhouse Records, the seminal L.A. punk label, along with Pat Garrett and David Brown. Slash and others have endured longer and done more, but Dangerhouse gave L.A. punk the jump start it needed- they released early singles by the Germs, X, Weirdos, and Avengers. Dangerhouse folded by 1979, leaving Los Angeles less than a year before Black Flag codified punk into hardcore, and then began the next phase of L.A. punk. Black Randy and his Metrosquad were a supergroup of the Hollywood punk era: the line up included members of the Randoms, Eyes, and the Dils as well as the other founding partners of Dangerhouse, David Brown and Pat Garrett. Musically, they were nothing like the hard-fast-loud sound of punk- if anything they were a '60's Soul/James Brown style funk/soul band that played rather fast, i.e., punk attitude. They also had echoes of early Blondie and the Who, with there tough and tight rock and roll. They were a funny band, a joke band in the sense that humor was key to understanding what they were about. The bands' music, with its circus-like Doors’ organ vibe, played the collective straight man to Black Randy's drunken, buffoonish, drawling, sneering voice. His voice is one of the few truly filthy voices of early punk music- every word he says is dripping in self hatred and general loathing, a venomous nicotine and beer-stained voice that's just laughing. His voice is sleazy enough that you don't just think that he just slept in a porn arcade (as the lyrics to his anthem I Slept in an Arcade discuss), you think he inhabited it. The band was perfectly in sync with Black Randy, playing covers of Shaft and Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud) while he took aim at the songs, exaggerating the swaggering manhood of one and the simple minded racial pride of the other to grotesque proportions. This was the second to the last release on Dangerhouse, issued in July of 1979, followed later that month by the only LP (not counting the one-sided 12” comp Yes, L.A.) to be issued by the label, Pass The Dust, I Think I’m Bowie, by Black Randy and Metro Squad. The label ground to a halt not long after this release.

NOTE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS:  These 7" singles and EP's come from my personal collection of punk, new wave, and indie releases. These, with little exception (and that will be noted) are used. They have been carefully played over the years, so show minimal signs of use. My grading of the vinyl is based on playing the record, how it sounds. I will note picture sleeves if they come with one and add a comment as to the condition of the sleeve and disc. Overall, the most obvious signs of use are on the picture sleeves along the opening edge, more obvious on the thinner paper stock sleeves. Over the remaining year (2007) I will continue adding items, in batches, until I have gone through my entire collection, (No I'm not getting rid of everything. Call it a heavy pruning). As my time is limited there will be a gap in posting listings of the 7"ers of a few days to a week or more between listings, so keep checking back. Each month, or so, I will relist the items that didn't go in the first round. At the conclusion I will relist all the unsold titles in a single listing. I worked in a record shop from 1974-1980 and set-up at record collector shows thereafter, so most of these items were purchased by me as they were issued, from various distributors, and throughout the 80's from dealers at the record shows (up to the present, but I'm stopping at the mid-80's for now). As I have moved several times over the years, what was once organized is now scattered throughout many many crates and boxes so if you write me about a particular title most likely I won't be able to say for sure if I have it or not. Be patient, keep checking my listings, as I'm sorting on a first come first list order.

If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me.

Multi-bid winners/purchasers:  If you combine various formats such as LPs, 7" singles, and CDs, please wait for my eBay invoice for the shipping total before making payment. Shipping discounts apply only to muti-purchases that are paid for in one single payment and shipped in a single package. NEW FEES: The US postal service has recently raised their rates (May 14, 2007), as well as the cost of shipping materials has increased, so I have had to adjust my shipping and handling fees. As I will phase in updating my eBay store items for current shipping and handling charges, if you purchase a newly listed item along with a previously listed store item the current new fee will apply. If you purchase only store items with the old fees I will honor the old fee amount. If you wait for my eBay invoice I will apply the correct fee.
