Brief Info: The early Deep Purple had a different sound and partially different line-up to the more familiar and heavier sound they became famous for starting with ‘In Rock’ and subsequent albums. Here cover versions were mixed with their own material and had a more progressive sound with hints of psychedelia. A band still finding their market and not selling in the numbers of the Ian Gillan era. This album, their second, and first issued on the new Harvest label. A very fine early example with few visual or audio blemishes.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with front and back laminate. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the Harvest promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate both side is ultra clear, fresh and retaining superb shine. Even under light, there is very little friction rubs or dulling – a hint on the back around the record shape. No lifting and minimal creasing, a small tip crease/dink on the back top right. So the very impressive artwork, particularly the front, looks fantastic.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little fault inside, clean and fresh looking with minimal creasing.

Top Edges: Straight, smooth with barely any wear.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with little wear, thickening or burring – traces only seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the exposed laminate end strips both wide and unworn.

Spine and Text: The construction of this cover means by opening, the spine forms a central crease which this has done. So although the text is fully present and unworn, it has marginally sunken into the crease as most will. Solid, straight and folded quite square, the edges meet up closely, but not quite parallel. The spine has retained most of its laminate with just a little peeling near the top, this on such spines is too common. In fact, many are seen with none, so this in that respect can almost be considered exceptional.

Corners: A little creasing on the front back spine top, little else or wear. Very fine or better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic Harvest cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a really lovely Harvest inner that has retained its polylining. Aged little with minimal discolouration compared to most seen. Hardly any creasing with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a fine visual copy that is clean with nice shine and solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with most of any surface marks being fine and light. A hairline is seen on side one, but is largely superficial – any of the tiny few ticks are very light, brief and faint, overall this vintage record plays very well indeed with little unwanted. Visually a strong record that should please many collectors, but not quite for the purists who want ‘perfection’ at any cost.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely Harvest record mostly plays above it’s fine visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Overall, an exceptional clean pressing that is devoid of crackle and pressing noises or tracking issues*. As stated any blemishes or minor ticks are very few and brief and finding a pre-EMI pressing to beat this significantly will never prove easy. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored within in a non-smoking environment. Little, if indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality record, how many records this great age will not have the odd minor blemish? It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
