Label Conditions: Both practically as made with just the odd small dull spot in manufacture, one of which falls on the first song title. I am struggling to find any spindle marks.

Rarity: Moderate but finding the early pressings in this type of condition is way harder, this is a superb copy that will thrill Sabbs fans for looks and sound. This copy includes the short hidden track known as ‘Blow on a Jug’ at the end of ‘The Writ’, this is uncredited on the actual album. This light-hearted lark-around was recorded at very low volume, it contains Ozzy and Bill Ward messing around in the studio and was later omitted.

Brief Info: The best metal band of all time’s sixth album and another classic within the dark heavy genre. Although not universally loved at first by some fans, many thought it slightly overproduced, it did indeed take far longer to mix in the studio than their previous records. Time finds most opinion the same now and this was arguably their last true classic although subsequent albums certainly had their moments but band problems and squabbles were fast coming to a head. This awesome piece of rock again progresses their sound further with use of keyboards, even the mellotron is featured as is a choir and tape effects. Sabotage includes for me, quite possibly, their greatest ever track in ‘Sympton of the Universe’, with one of the most powerful rock riffs ever recorded – this still rings in my subconscious after seeing them perform live at Hammersmith Odeon towards the end of the 70s – what a night that was with the most awesome sound you could ever imagine, I can still see those stacked column of Marshall’s now. Play this record to maximum volume, a copy that’s easily up to the task with practically perfect sound, to get the full pleasure of this awesome band. No other metal act were like the vintage Sabbs and all their first six albums are essential. This would not be the rarest album I have ever offered but one of the best examples for sound and cover. So often this album is seen in poor, worn conditions, the sleeve is very prone to wear and seldom seen with little. Often the thinner pressed later copies crackle and do not do this stunning album justice. For those who want a fantastic all round copy that plays beautifully – look no further, it’s here – Oh Lord Yeah!

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) a single, unlaminated format that has a lovely textured finish that has an almost ‘leatherlike’ feel with soft card – clearly very wear-prone. This was printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Cover Front: A superb, clean and fresh example with the lovely delicate textured finish looking great. Blemishes are few and faint, a few small and faint edge hairline creases and one very small pressmark near the right edge, but that’s about it. Rich deep colour and factory-fresh looks, this is so hard to find like this. The lack of rubbing and even more, ring marks or abrasions is a massive bonus and refreshing to view. This classic Black Sabbath cover front will be hard to find much better.

Cover Back: If anything, even better, this really has barely anything to fault at all and try finding this back better. Not even a hint of any ringwear.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both show barely any traces of wear and are very straight too.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear, feathering or burring – all common on this one. Guaranteed, untrimmed. Record entered on this right outside edge.

Spine and Text: A very neat and barely worn spine and even this is textured too. Solid, straight with minimal compression or surface wear. All text is perfect and unworn which must never be taken for granted on this one.

Corners: Very mild tip rubbing only and all retain lovely neat shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile mid-70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: This includes its original lined inner that is in strong EX+ condition, lining intact and showing little signs of wear or ageing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and probably undergraded at that. Evidence suggests barely played reitterated by fantastic looks and sound. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Barely a noteworthy mark or blemish to be seen and visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: One for the Black Sabbath vinyl connoisseur. This stunning record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, with all frequencies sharp and clear. Sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and highly impressive sound. A brilliant production with bags of detail and immense power. That mind-blowing riff on ‘Symptom’ is breathtaking and demands to be played at maximum volume with pre-warmed up amps to raise the rafters. What those bass drivers lurch to reproduce these powerful bass-chords – metal rarely gets better than this. Even though predominately a heavy record, this does have some quieter, more subtle moments and any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this example significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this blistering real metal album. Nobody did or does it better than these four guys. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
