Description
Black Sabbath Vol. 4 : Original 1st Pressing 1Y1 / 2Y1
This Vertigo first pressing plays with immaculate audio apart from a few seconds of interference on S1 and comes complete with the correct gatefold (booklet still attached) which is in excellent condition as is the original 'swirl' inner.
As per the first pressings the gatefold has the 'VO Price Code' on the back and no track times on the inside. The Side B label does not have 'Made in England' on as per the subsequent pressings. 'Porky & Pecko' is also etched on the run out grooves and this is only seen on the first pressings.

Visual grading
This is a fantastic looking vinyl and has hardly been played down the years. There is very little spindle wear and it has a beautiful jet black glossy sheen. It looks 'as new' at first glance and it is only on closer inspection that you can see one barely visible scratch on S1, it really is so small! You would not see it unless you knew where to look for it! Apart from that the record is in 'perfect' shape and I don't think I've seen one cleaner. S2 is in pristine immaculate condition and does look as if it was pressed yesterday. I cannot detect any hairlines on either side and this is a first pressing that has been so carefully looked after down the years.
Play grading
From the very first groove 'Wheels Of Confusion' plays with immaculate audio the likes of which is so rarely heard today. There is no interference at all until the fade out where you can hear 7/8 clicks caused by the tiny scratch. Aside from that this is audio of the highest standard and it plays as well as when first released back in '72. It could not play with any greater depth or power. The definition of each note is stunning i.e. there is no 'muddiness' or distortion on the sound. This is why we listen to vinyl - when you get a vinyl that has been so well preserved the audio cannot be replicated by any other medium. 'Tomorrow Dream' has such a strong deep sound and this time the entire track plays without fault. The sonic quality is stunning and again it plays with such incredible power and the bass is just so strong on this track. This is a stunning version and easily grades as Mint- it is that good. The following version of 'Changes' is one of the 'cleanest' I have heard in a long time. There is just a minimal hint of static on the intro and a couple of faint 'ticks' about one minute and the remainder then impresses with great clarity. There are no loud clicks or pops at all and this is 'high end' audio for certain. It is very rare to find this very quiet track playing so clearly and gives further evidence of a vinyl hardly played. There is just the odd mild hint of mega light static in the background here and there but is negligible as it so quiet. It is what you would find on a new vinyl let alone one pressed 47 years ago! I am confident of a Near Mint grading here. The 'FX' intro plays with great clarity but with some light static that is slightly more obvious for about five seconds but again is not intrusive in any way. Thereon the audio is superb and for such a quiet instrumental the clarity is stunning. No clicks, pops or crackle and barely any static! 'Supernaut' plays with immense power from the word go. Final tracks on any side are often affected by interference but that is certainly not the case here. You can turn the volume up loud without fear of distortion and the sonic quality is just breathtaking. This is Mint- without doubt, the drum solo section is awesome and even the extended fade out is perfect. I don't think I've heard a better version! Wow!
'Snowblind' has audio of an impeccable standard with no interference of any kind. There is such incredible depth to the audio and there is no distortion on the top end. The solo near the end is 'as new' and this is another Mint- track. I listen to every second of every track and do not over-grade as my feedback testifies. 'Cornucopia' plays to the same level and again there is just no 'background'. The power and clarity of the recording could not be any better. As is often the case when writing a 'full' description I am running out of adjectives here! This is absolutely stunning and I cannot believe what I am hearing, audio does not get any better than this! What follows is the most impressive 'Laguna Sunrise' you will ever hear. The clarity is of the highest calibre and it is no exaggeration to say every note plays 'as new'. I would grade a 'perfect' sounding track as Mint- to adhere to Record Collector guidelines but I know Mint when I hear it! A beautiful rendition for certain. 'St. Vitus Dance' again plays to the same exacting standard. The clarity is second to none and the separation is stunning i.e. you can hear each instrument so clearly including the vocal. If I am being super harsh there is just a minimal touch of mega light static on the fade out. 'Under The Sun' ends this 'mega clean' vinyl with superlative audio once more. There is just nothing that intrudes on the quality of the Mint- listen. There are no clicks or pops and no static or crackle either. I sit very closely to the speakers and always pick up any interference! This track 'rocks out' in superb fashion with stunning clarity and no sign of any distortion whatsoever. The end sequence has to be strongest I have ever heard! What an ending!
In summary this UK first pressing has audio of an immaculate standard and it is only on one of the fade outs where there is some obvious interference. The power and depth during the louder sections is stunning and the quieter passages also play with sublime clarity which is rare on a first pressing. This vinyl has been so well preserved and with a very clean 'first press' gatefold and 'swirl' inner this would be a fantastic addition to any collection.
The Gatefold
This is a very impressive gatefold with only very minor wear. One of the cleanest I have seen and it comes complete with the four page inner booklet fully attached. The edges have only a small amount of rubbing and the wide spine remains 100% legible with only a handful of tiny 'rubs' and a little corner wear. The right hand corners have only minor wear and the opening edge is also incredibly clean with no handling wear at all. The front cover is in wonderful condition with no marking, just a couple of very small creases, and the back cover is the same. The VO price Code can be seen on the back. The inside of the gatefold is in superb condition including the booklet. A fine example of this 'first press' Vertigo gatefold.
Vertigo Inner sleeve
The poly-lined large swirl Vertigo inner is in excellent condition with only one mega small 2cm side split. There is some creasing but there is very little age related fading.
The labels
The Vertigo swirl labels are in beautiful condition with very little spindle wear. There are no markings or writing, they could hardly be any better!
