Description
This is the original 1976 pressing on the band's own Black Vinyl Records label. They printed only a thousand copies, and generously included a photo/credits insert, a round sticker, and a Shoes iron-on transfer for making your own (significantly cool) t-shirt...all these items are included here.
This is the most beautiful of lo-fi livingroom recordings, with a greatly talented group who had to start somewhere, and made that very low-cost debut a labor of love...they knew what they had, and so did PVC records who picked them up for the second edition a year later, and then Sire who brought them out in the UK. Those editions featured a different mix to the one here; this is the true glowing original handmade mix. (And can't be hoped-for on any streaming service, and so yeah I guess this piece of vinyl is the only way it can be heard.)
I bought it off the wall of Rather Ripped Records in Berkeley CA, the week it came out. Who could resist the Man Ray-style photogram cover, as handmade and uncommercial a piece of cover art as any pop album ever had, and a perfect artifact to stare at as the ghostly earnest harmonies come out of your stereo.
The vinyl and all the other merch inside are flawless, and the sleeve is so nearly so that I'm calling the whole package NM/NM.
If you don't happen to want to spring for this copy, try to hear the music someplace, it's heartbreaking in its honesty and the care with which it was recorded. For me they're the missing link between Big Star and the dB's in a forgotten moment when it seemed that power pop (meaning guitars and glorious committed vocal harmonies) was all around and was about to break through to the wider world. (Didn't happen!)
