Bob Dylan, The Bootleg Series Volumes 1 - 3 (Rare and Unreleased 1961-1991).

1991 Dutch pressed Columbia Records five LP box set, 468086 1. Each LP is housed in an individual picture sleeve, and the set includes a 68-page booklet with song-by-song notes by John Bauldie.

Vinyl in very near mint condition. Just a very few spider trace marks visible at centre spindle areas. Surfaces have a rich and bright gloss and are free of any marks save for just one small visible but non-sounding superficial paper hairline scuff. Appears little and carefully played. (Note that the linear marks visible to the vinyl surfaces in the photo are merely background reflections).

Labels are clean and undefaced throughout and also with a good gloss.

Individual sleeves are clean and without splits, bar one tiny and neat centre seam split to bottom of one sleeve only. The sleeves are fairly lightweight in construction and have some minor handling and record outline impression marks, common with these sets.

Booklet is clean and unmarked but has minor handling creasing and a very small piece of loss to top right corner of front wrap.

Both parts of the main box are structurally sound and without splits. Front and rear are still clean looking with just a very few of the most minor of white scrape marks. No sticker, pen or similar marks. A little minor patching to right hand side of top edge. Some fairly light chipping to joint edges and tips, but spine areas are not excessively rubbed, although there is a more prominent scuff mark to top right corner of front lid. This area has been photographed for clarification.

On the whole still a very clean and well preserved set, with the LPs especially being in great shape.

THE BOOTLEG SERIES, VOLUMES 1-3 consists mostly of previously-unreleased studio outtakes. It also include demos and alternate versions of released material, and a handful of live tracks. Recordings date from between 1961 and 1989.

Dylan proved to be not only one of the most bootlegged of 20th Century performers, but also one of the first (GREAT WHITE WONDER was one of the releases that turned bootlegging from a pastime into an industry). Over the years, Dylan's legions of fans rabidly traded recordings of live shows, out-takes, demos and other rare material.

THE BOOTLEG SERIES attempts to supply the definitive collection of what had been bootlegged material. Its content moves along chronologically, spanning the length of Dylan's career and providing candid, previously verboten glimpses into his creative process, and consequently, his musical genius.

The set features some intriguing versions of traditional tunes like "He Was a Friend Of Mine" and "House Carpenter," and some obscure cuts from his "protest" period, such as "Paths of Victory" and "Who Killed Davy Moore?" Dylan is in his prime moving from alternative versions of HIGHWAY 61 material to radically recast tunes from the sublime BLOOD ON THE TRACKS.

Some of the gems include the eerie ballad "Blind Willie McTell," inexplicably cut from the INFIDELS sessions, and the newest song on this collection, "Series of Dreams," a swirling, surreal look back at a lifetime on the edge.
