EXTREMELY RARE progressive rock album by this BOURNEMOUTH band.  Refer below for some of the original liner notes by Jimmy Grant-BBC London, followed by my own comments (…):

P.M. written by Nite People—refers to their nocturnal habits—basic group line up plus guitar through a leslie speaker. (Melodic heavy rocker, also issued as a single – great track)

ROCK ISLAND LINE originally a hit for Lonnie Donegan—hillbilly voice by Jimmy Warwick—Santa Fe engine noises courtesy of Freddy Staff and John Hockridge. (Superb heavy guitar-work and a driving rhythm section)

TRAIN AND A RIVER written by Jimmy Guiffre—from “Jazz On A Summers Day”, piano solo Barry Curtis. (Very cool jazz-tinged number, with an interesting piano solo)

REACH OUT I’LL BE THERE a pop standard—arranged by Scott Kirkpatrick and Barry Curtis—harpsichord added as an afterthought. (Heavy take on this Four Tops classic with scorching guitar)

FUNKY HOE written by Nite People—conceived in a Bournemouth rehearsal room—guitar and organ passages added during the session. (Funk instrumental with groovy guitar/keyboard interplay)

SEASON OF THE RAIN an Elton John, Bernie Taupin composition—vocals Jimmy Warwick and ‘Fergy’ Ferguson. (Most commercial track on the album, also appears on b-side of ‘P.M.’ single)

NATIVE LAND first heard by the group in the ‘White Hart’ at Penzance being played by a local jazz band—a set of parts acquired by Scott Kirkpatrick—routined and recorded—double track recorder played by Barry Curtis. (Moody instrumental with a progressive jazz flavour – reminds me of TON TON MACOUTE)

NORTH CANADIAN PARADISE deals with the subject of seal hunting—lead vocal Jimmy Warwick. (Melodic rocker with tasty guitar and swirling keyboards)

DELILAH former Tom Jones hit—arranged by Jimmy Warwick and ‘Fergy’ Ferguson—lead trumpet Freddy Staff. (Intensely heavy with astonishing guitar-work – you will never hear another version like this!)

PEACHES EN REGALIA FRANK ZAPPA composition – recorded with the brass and reeds. (Excellent cover version which highlights the band’s musical diversity and skill)

Excerpt from Vernon Joynson’s ‘The Tapestry Of Delights Revisited’:

This progressive rock outfit from Bournemouth’s music was characterised by a heavy organ and guitar sound.  Ferguson and Gordon were both born in Cornwall; Bell was from Weymouth; Curtis was born in Farringdon, Berkshire and Jimmy Warwick was born James Shipstone in St Hellier in Jersey.  So they originated from quite a wide catchment area!  They released four 45s for Fontana and then Bell, Clark and Gordon left.  Scott Kirkpatrick was recruited on bass and they switched to Page One for three further 45s and their album.

Their album included a rework of Frank Zappa’s ‘Peaches en Regalia’, but their finest moment was their Morning Sun 45 for Fontana, which was written and produced by the Spencer Davis Group and can also be heard on Jagged Time Lapse, Vol 2.  Their version of Hot Smoke and Sassafras can also be heard on Glimpses, Vol. 1.  They relied a lot on cover versions on their 45s; Sweet Tasting Wine (Tony Colton), Trying To Find Another Man (Righteous Brothers oldie) and Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran).  More recently, Weird And Funny has been compiled on Colour Me Pop, Vol 2 and Love, Love, Love also appears on We Can Fly, Vol 2.
