Label/Format: CBS, orange format with matt, fairly smooth surfaces. Any text detail clearly seen on my pictures.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Another purchased new by one owner, cover-protected and clearly hardly played.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Brief Info: The first Bob Dylan ‘Greatest Hits’ album that offers twelve classics up to 1966. There is little else to add really – simply a beautiful compilation of early Dylan gems and few better ways to hear them than all together on an early vinyl source. This hardly played and with a lovely laminated, gold ‘Stereo’ stickered cover – clearly still manufactured when mono was the order-of-the-day.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminated, the covers all folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Shorewood Packaging Co Ltd and including the ‘Patents Pending’ text. This a standard mono cover, so this early copy includes the six-sided gold ‘Stereo’ sticker to denote what is inside. CBS clearly recognised mono records were going to sell more than stereo, so it was more cost-effective to put a Stereo sticker on the back rather than pay for another set of printing plates to make a dedicated stereo version.

Lamination & Front: The laminate has little to fault bar four half moon surface creases towards the right. It retains fine shine and clarity with any dulling light. There is no lifting or impressions, any surface traces minimal and faint. A very nice looking front that offers scant clues of age.

Cover Back: Any hint of discolouration gentle, little and light near the edges. No creasing or rubbing, the gold ‘Stereo’ sticker still fresh and shiny.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both folds straight and unworn, any thickening to the card end on the bottom minimal and very light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and very light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A nigh-on perfect spine, solid, straight with no compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, hardly any, better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the CBS unlined inner promotes albums up to 1967, so it seems logical this copy dates from the end of that year or into 1968. This in superb condition as well with just a fine almost hairline crease one side stopping a near mint grading. Minor traces of seam edge adhesive darkening that few avoid, but the paper still clean, fresh and hardly aged at all. Both window circles pristine and no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic compilation of early hits plays up and, and most even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
