Legends tell of Barbados-via-South London producer Dennis Bovell, better known by the dread epithet Blackbeard, who now wakes from a leviathan slumber with a bitterly sage, battle-scorn impartation in LP form, Wise Music In Dub. The record entirely sidesteps any would-be tutorial or cut-rate dubbing. Instead, it rewires the organic backend of the sound, culturing in vitro a sort of a bioengineered kraken in post-dub. Recalling his various UK lovers rock rakings with Matumbi since the 70s, Bovell assembles a standout crew for this now rather prophetic but ominous fulfilment: Carroll Thompson breathes new life into Minnie Riperton's 'Les Fleurs', Leee John reinterprets The Stylistics' 'You're A Big Girl Now', and Papa Dee joins on 'Don't Stay Out Late'. Drummer Perry Melius (Aswad, African Headcharge), Soothsayer saxophonist Idris Rahman and trumpeter Robin Hopcraft, plus contributions from steel pan player Swizz The Panist and guitarist Ian Alleyne, all add texture across 'Dub Season' and 'Dub Head'.
