So you are asking yourself, “Self, why would I want to buy a Brian Eno ambient album on vinyl? Everybody knows the music he created was more in line with digital sound and recording but digital recording and CDs were not available back then.” The answer is actually there in the question. You want to buy the analog recordings because they ARE analog recordings. They are different from later standard CD pressings as well as CD remixes and remasters and they are alien to MP3 reproduction. “Let’s see how Eno handled a new sound on an existing analog medium. What did it sound like and what was he satisfied with releasing so his fans would enjoy what they heard. Talk about a challenge. Bottom line: This music does not sound the same as later digital copies and reissues.
The interesting thing about this first pressing and of analog LP copies of this LP is that there were no CDs at the time of its initial release. While Eno & Fripp’s ambient work lent itself perfectly to the new digital medium of CDs once the discs became available, these original analog releases sound DIFFERENT than their later CD cousins. The sound/mix of this pressing is obviously analog based and the texture and tone is simply not the sale as the later digital copies. Whether that is good or bad is up to you BUT as a collector or listener with a discerning ear, these copies are quite collectible because you can now ONLY get these mixes/mastering on these older analog releases. Not only that, but any later vinyl reissues are different as well than the 1st copies because they are either remasters or have been “cleaned up” (read different sound).
BTW, there are a couple of jokers who are selling first pressing sealed copies as “original master” copies and are justifying it by saying these first discs that were pressed from the metal mother discs of that era had not been compromised yet by being used to create thousands of repeated pressings. Because the metal mothers had yet to degrade through use, these sealed copies (like this one) are as close to master copies as you can get. While that is total crap and a lame sales pitch just to charge more to buyers, the idea actually is sound in that these first pressing LPs that are still sealed are superior to later pressings for technical reasons surrounding use. Of course, that doesn’t mean sellers should be gouging buyers and claiming these are actual “master copies”. They are worth more but not master copy prices. I refuse to subscribe to that questionable practice. Sorry, I got on my soapbox there for a minute.
I have just posted an amazing collection of Brian Eno vinyl first pressings and they all have this sound difference in common. Check ‘em out. It’s a special chance to pick up these highly collectible analog mixes in GREAT shape for decent prices.
