Description
THIS RECORD is fascinating on several counts: It's an ad, from 1940, for "Brilhart Enduro" reeds, for clarinet and sax. These were the first-ever plastic reeds, and Arnold Brilhart, the inventor (and knowing pro saxophonist himself), wanted to put them over to the Reeding Public in a big way. So he rounded up some of his friends in the music biz, got them each to speak for a spell, then play. These friends are: CHESTER HAZLETT, TONY PASTOR, "HYMIE" SCHERTZER, "HANK" ROSS, BENNY CARTER, HAROLD FREEMAN, "TOOTS" MONDELLO and ARTIE SHAW. All these guys are music legends today. Here's a rare chance to hear each one, up close and personal.
It was Artie Shaw, incidentally, who REALLY got Enduro reeds on the map. His glowing, epic clarinet solo on his 1940 record of "Star Dust" made Enduro a by-word in the Music Biz. Shaw used an Enduro reed only that ONE TIME - to make that record! He kept the reed, and bequeathed it to fellow clarinetist Dan Levinson, who owns it today. Now, if you should go up to Dan on the job, at the Iguana Club in New York, in the reed section of Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, and you bug him enough to show you this reed, Mr. Levinson, a normally peaceable man, will be happy to bop you over the head with his huge clarinet book.
This original c.1940 Endure record is in EE- condition. Some caustic liquid spilled onto the playing surface of side A. It makes a mildly annoying little noise.
*****
These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
