Brinsley Schwarz's eponymous debut is the stuff of rock legend because it is the punch line to a great story. It arrived after a disastrous publicity blitz, where the band's management arranged for prominent British journalists to cross the ocean to hear the Brinsleys' showcase performance at the Fillmore East. In a series of mishaps that would shame Spinal Tap, the band arrived in New York hours before their show and the journalists, who dipped heavily into the courtesy bar when their plane nearly crashed, arrived minutes before the concert and not surprisingly all did not go too well.
The record itself is a UK blend of Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, with a heavy dose of early Yes.
It's filled with the group's over-romanticised view of Californian hippies but amidst all this hippie posturing there some fascinating touches, like the multi-octave chromatic guitar break on "Hymn to Me" or the heavy prog jam of "What Do You Suggest?" and "Ballad of a Has-Been Beauty Queen" illustrate just how English the Brinsleys still were at this stage.
All of this adds up to a debut that's decidedly uneven, but in retrospect, it's easy to be charmed by their eccentricities

Clean, bright and unmarked labels with just a couple of light spindle traces
VINYL Visual: MINT-
Both surfaces retain their original deep, like-new glossy sheen - a (very) few harmless hairlines are visible under bright light
VINYL Audio: NEAR MINT
Even thought this copy has seen little use and looks stunning it plays with an odd tick here and there - no scratches or anything continuous and nothing I found in the slightest intrusive - no other audible distractions of any kind - the sound is deep, rich and warm
SLEEVE: MINT-
The finest example of this heavily textured gatefold sleeve I have seen - it looks like-new - the colure are incredibly rich and vibrant and completely unfaded and just a touch of rub to the corners is the only thing preventing a full MINT grading - amazing condition
LYRIC INSERT: EXCELLENT+
Apart from one edge crease (please see close-up photo) the insert is unmarked and practically untouched
INNER SLEEVE: NEAR MINT
Again, practically untouched - no seam splits
