ABOUT THESE 78's (please read):
I've been selling 45's and LP's worldwide since 1981. My expertise is in those configurations. I'm not an expert on 78's but the grading scale seems clear enough. In the next few weeks, I'll be listing a number of 78's I acquired from a radio station here in Grand Rapids Michigan back in 1971 before getting into radio as an occupation myself just two later for 37 years before retiring in 2010.
The station where I got these 78's was a heritage AM station that signed on in 1948 and when they acquired a second signal (FM) in '71 it was necessary for them to move to a larger facility. They called me and pretty much said "Get these 78's out of here if you want them, before they go in a dumpster."
I succeeded in grabbing about a thousand of them but unfortunately, left about another thousand behind - I just wasn't quick enough. Since then, they have been in storage at my house and I've now decided it's time to part with them.
These records were handled EXTREMELY well during their on-air days. Along with a few normal light scuffs from moving around a few times over 60+ years, most of the titles are SCRATCH-FREE and in really great condition. And although most have lost their gloss, hardly any show any wear from airplay.
Most of them have numbers (like "3" or "3 1/2" etc.) written in grease-pencil (completely harmless) in the dead wax. I've come to the conclusion that these numbers were to indicate to the DJ how much 'weight' was necessary on the turntables so they would play perfectly 'on air.' None have any affect on play. Some also have tiny 'arrows' in the lead-in area - I'm assuming to help them find the start of the record for cueing. Again, no affect on play and grease pencils, a common tool at radio stations back then, again, are completely harmless.
I've visually graded these the best I can. However, to assure everyone is completely happy, I've included sound clips of each entire side so you can make an educated decision. Please listen to them all the way through so we can avoid any disappointment. I think you will find that most of them play like brand new.
The sound clips were made without any type of filters. I used a Shure M78S Cartridge (tied for mono) and ran a direct line into a Tascam CD-RW750 Pro CD recorder. The clips are at 98k bitrate to keep the file size small, so you can be assured that the record itself will sound even better than these clips.
