BUBBLE PUPPY

'A Gathering Of Promises'

International Artists Records IA-LP 10

Rare ORIGINAL 1st Pressing Vinyl LP 1969

LP Description:

Bubble Puppy - "A Gathering Of Promises" - IA-LP 10. A truly fabulous ORIGINAL US FIRST 1969 PRESSING International Artists LP , featuring a stunning mix of psychedelia, blues and country. Quintessential vibey west coast psych dominated by tour de force lead guitar playing that is almost a master class in various guitar styles of the late sixties. Straight from the bottle, live in the studio sound. Its sad, that they like so many intriguing Psych bands only lived for one album. This superb album will be of major interest to psych rock fans and is a 'must have' for any serious collector of the genre.

Hailing from Corpus Christi, Texas, and originally known as The New Seeds and then Willowdale Handcar, 1967 found bassist Roy Cox, drummer David Fore and guitarists Todd Potter and Rod Prince relocating to Austin where their live act began attracting local interest as Bubble Puppy (the name reportedly chosen while tripping at a Hendrix concert where they happened across a copy of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World"). In 1968 the group won a recording contract with the tiny International Artists Records (home of Texas' own 13th Floor Elevators), relocating to Houston.

Produced by Ray Rush, their debut album "A Gathering of Promises" features a sublime mixture of conventional rock and psychedelia. Mixing occasionally incoherent lyrics with attractive guitar-propelled melodies and sweet harmonies, the album isn't without it's period charm, particularly the fluke hit single "Hot Smoke and Sassafrass", the title track and "Hurry Sundown". Propelled by the title track and an American tour opening for Steppenwolf, the album hit #176 before being quickly deleted. Unfortunately, by mid-1970, International Artists was history, leaving the band to sign with ABC's Dunhill subsidiary. Cox, Fore and Potter subsequently continued their collaboration as Demian. If you are not familiar with Bubble Puppy, chances are you will like them if you enjoy sixties bands like the 13th Floor Elevators, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Blue Cheer, Spirit, Blues Magoos etc..

From the late 60's to early 70's, central Texas had a remarkable feast of music from so many bands. Bubble Puppy was one. Their popularity was fierce in those long lost hazy days. Bubble Puppy were actually one of the first rock bands to feature two lead guitar players (Rod Prince and Todd Potter). Their big hit was a psychedelic piece called "Hot Smoke and Sassafrass".

"A Gathering Of Promises" is a great album, for sure, with all the killer ingredients that any psychedelic rock fan will enjoy. This legendary Texas band has some similarities to 13th Floor Elevators.  They don't have that jug percussion or the vocals of Erickson, but the sound is at times similar.  They also exhibit solid harmonies akin to other psych bands.  The single "Hot Smoke and Sassafrass" is fabulous, as are most of the songs on the album.  "I've Got to Reach You," "Hurry Sundown," and "Lonely" are other amazing tracks. The whole album is greatness, a melting-pot of blues, country and above all psychedelia with two acid lead guitars well to the fore which mingle each other, like in the beautiful "Elizabeth". A couple of other tracks that stand out are a pair of psych gems, "Lonely" and "Beginnings" both complete with the requisite killer fuzz guitar solos.

While musically not the heaviest of bands in the hard rock psych realm, it’s their remarkable fusion of subtlety and vigor that zones a listener in. Sometimes that’s all it takes. One tune that could have filled your ears in the past is “Hot Smoke and Sassafras”, unexpected charter at #9 in the US - discordant guitars squeal from silence, erupt into the provocative, almost untamed main riff that you can listen to all day, and solidifies into a synchronized vocal harmony that would become their trademark. Following that is “Todd’s Tune”, a mellow bluesy number that slowly rises like a balloon and continues to the end with hard rock aggression. The lengthy “I’ve Got to Reach You” spends its time in the slower, more placid realm, while near-feral guitar licks and a galloping riff drive “Lonely” to a heavier home. Concluding side one is the strange, lightly sung and strummed title cut that takes a disheartening, colorless sadness and converts it to a peculiar, almost eerie emotive uplifting, as if all problems at the song’s start had mysteriously been cured during the gloom.

Flipping the album, “It’s Safe to Say” is another pseudo-acoustical ditty with nice, around-the-campfire vocals and feel-good mood, but is surrounded by four hungry predators. “Hurry Sundown”, “Elisabeth”, “Road to St. Stephens” and the grand “Beginning” dance together with fairly heavy fuzz and harmony, particularly audible in the final track “Beginning” where several beefy tangents break loose; David Fore’s short, but dizzying drum display and Todd Potter and Rod Prince’s dual guitar hydra that finishes the lp on the tone it began on: heavy.

While on tour with Steppenwolf, the band uprooted to sunny California, signed with ABC/Dunhill, and became Demian for a sole lp in 1970 (please see my other listings for an original copy of the brilliant Demian LP).

This rare original Bubble Puppy LP comes to you very highly recommended....I doubt if you can find a much better condition International Artists 1st pressing of this fabulous, top-notch late 60's psych album....A classic for sure....Awesome stuff!! Low start with no reserve! Don't miss it!
