Budgie : In For The Kill! A1 / B1 1st Press Promo (Not For Sale!)
This very rare 'Promo' first pressing is absolutely stunning! There is no interference on either side and the clarity and sonic quality is exceptional. This was obviously a record that was issued for promotional use only and hardly played. I have played both sides in full and I can honestly say the sound quality is Mint and is a FINAL UPGRADE album without doubt.
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear around the edges. On the back it has two MCA stickers one of which says 'Property of MCA Records Not for Sale For Promotion Only'.

Visual grading
The vinyl is stunning and looks 'as new' basically. It has a lovely jet-black glossy sheen and has no obvious hairlines, I could not find any under a strong light. There are no marks or scratches and could not be any more visually impressive. There is just one very small faint spindle trace on the S1 label and only 2/3 on S2. The run out grooves are also super clean with no marking. A superb example of this first pressing.
Play grading
'In For The Kill' begins superbly with no interference on the intro, the clarity is exceptional, and it continues to play with sublime quality. It has that typical deep and rich Budgie sound with such a heavy bass and having played this track in its entirety (as I always do) I can safely say there is intrusion on the audio at all. The clarity and depth of the audio is equal to that of a hardly played vinyl, it grades as Mint and is a perfect start to the album. The long fade out has just one mega light dust tick which demonstrates just how good the clarity is here.
The classic 'Crash Course In Brain Surgery' is outstanding from start to finish with not one iota of interference. Again the sonic quality cannot be faulted here and you could not wish to hear a more 'complete' version. Once more there is no need for a minus here this is Mint every day of the week!
The acoustic 'Wondering What Everyone Knows' stands out as by Budgie standards it is a quiet track and yet it plays with impeccable clarity from the first note to the last. Mint
The quiet intro on 'Zoom Club' has no 'background' and as the volume increases there is no let up in quality. As the vocal begins the clarity is still there and the first chorus is 'as new'. From then on it continues to impress with great power and the clarity is second to none. Put simply it could not play any better - there is interference or distortion and the long instrumental is again a classic example of a vinyl that has hardly ever been on a turntable! The final vocal section is flawless and this really is audio of the highest standard. Mint is again richly deserved. Wow what a side!

'Hammer And Tongs' has such quiet intro and yet the clarity here is amazing! For the opening grooves to play as well as this is a genuine rarity and let's not forget this vinyl is 46 years old! There are only a couple of barely audible dust ticks and once you hear Bourge's familiar guitar sound this 'high end' quality is still there. It progresses in exactly the same way with no interference and the quieter passage near the end also has no 'background'. To the end this is 'as new' I cannot praise it highly enough and again the long fade out does not have one single dust tick. A Mint start to S2.
'Running From my Soul' is of the same standard I am pleased to say. The lengthy intro is faultless but then that can be said for every section here. The quieter section plays with perfect precision and the clarity from start to finish including every vocal is Mint in every way.
The percussive intro on 'Living On Your Own' is 'as new' and this continues into the instrumental opening. Thereafter there are no negatives. The clarity and definition is STUNNING and whilst the vocal is actually quite high in the mix there is no distortion which is a rarity. The quieter mid section has no 'background' and the next instrumental section also plays to an immaculate standard. The final vocal is equal to that and right to the very end the audio cannot be faulted. Once again I am confident in grading this as Mint- audio does not get any better than this!
In summary this first pressing MCA promo is a stunning example of a hardly played record. So often these promos were given to record company execs / radio stations and then hardly played again and this is a prime example of that. Not only is the vinyl visually stunning but there is just no interference at all. How often does every track on a first press from '74 play with 'as new' Mint audio?! I listen to every track in full so as to provide a comprehensive grading and if I hear even the lightest of ticks (it doesn't even need to be a click!) I will mention it. This is a FINAL UPGRADE record in the sense that you could not improve upon the audio. The sonic quality is immaculate and any collector would be as impressed as I am by this stunning album.
The Cover
The G & L cover is in superb condition with barely any shelf wear. As can be seen it has two MCA stickers on the back, one stating their address etc and the other saying 'Property of MCA Records Not for Sale For Promotion Only'. The edges and thin pinched spine have no rubbing at all. There is hardly any corner wear and the opening edge is also near perfect. The laminated front cover has no obvious marking as such - all you can see is some minor faint staining around the edges and a little wear along the bottom edge. Maybe it had some tape around the edges at some point but like I say it is only minor. Aside from that it is very clean with no laminate damage or creasing. The back cover is in superb order with only a couple of small creases. Overall a fine example of this 'PROMO' cover.
The Inner Sleeve
I don't think this is the original inner as it is dated 6-78 on one side but it is nonetheless in superb condition with only one tiny barely visible side splits and no tears or marking and barely any creasing.
The Labels
The MCA 'rainbow' labels are super clean with writing and just one often seen 'print mark' on the S2 label next to the spindle hole. As stated there is only very minimal spindle wear. Stunning!
