Description

Bach: Suites for Unaccompanied Cello Janos Starker Label: Mercury Living Presence SR39016 Year of Release: 1966 Details: Stereo, gold label promotional only press of this classic recording and performance. All labels are "deep groove". This one lives up to the hype; if you're reading this you are more than aware of the legendary status of this set so I won't bore you with additional superlatives.

Condition: Box: VG(+). The box is in nice shape but the cover of the box has become detatched from the rear of the box. If you've seen this before it's not uncommon, the lid of the box is attached to the rear component simply by having the paste-on cover glued from the front to the back, in effect acting as a hinge. At this hinge point, the paste on cover has cracked from the top of the spine to the bottom w/ the result being that the front of the box is no longer connected to the rear. The split was fairly clean all things considered, and the box itself still presents well. There is a small 1 1/2 inch split on the bottom front of the box, and the right front corner of the box, has frayed and the corner joint has separated. The other corners have some minor wear. All in all it still looks quite nice. LPS: All LPs are glossy and very clean. Disc 1 stampers: RFR3/ RFR1. NM- with a few very light hairlines. Disc 2 stampers: RFR2/RFR2. NM-, no wear to speak of. Disc 3 stampers: RFR2/RFR2 NM-, again no wear to speak of. The LPs are all glossy, clean, and certainly do not look as if they have been played much. Inserts: There are three inserts all in excellent condition. One is a promotional memo from Mercury Classical News extolling the virtues of this set. The second is a detailed timing sheet, and the third is 12x12 fold out booklet with detailed liner notes.
Grading Information: I grade strictly (see my feedback). The grading system I employ is as follows: M=Unplayed. New. NM=Only the most minor wear if any, nothing that affects playback. LP is bright, glossy and free of defects. Cover is clean, no splits, and shows only the most minor/trivial wear. EX=I do not use this grade. Equivalent to VG++. VG++=some minor wear, some visible marks, no deep scratches. A well taken care of record with only minor wear. Cover may have some minor ring wear and some wear around the edges, but nothing substantial. VG+=more marks that may cause occasional surface noise. Still a very playable disc, still sounding excellent, that will most will be quite happy with. Cover will show some wear and may have some seam splitting or small tears. Still very presentable.
